Sony Vaio P Rebate: Awesome or Not Enough?

I've been all over the Sony Vaio P since its unveiling at CES this year.

I've been all over the Sony Vaio P since its unveiling at CES this year. It's hot, but I do have my qualms. First off is the price. I know Sony's been telling us not to call it a netbook, but seriously after taking in the size, weight, and specs, the resemblance is there. Why its price starts at hundreds more than other ultra portables in its class is beyond me. So when Sony rolled out a $200 rebate on the Vaio P series notebook yesterday, I admit I was a bit surprised.

Yup, Sony is already slashing the price of the Vaio P, and it hasn't even hit the shelves yet! But as you may have thought, there is a catch: the rebate is given exclusively through Verizon when you sign up for a two year mobile-broadband subscription, you know, since that is the only network you can get your speedy 3G access from. This rebate will most likely cover (or partially cover) the cost of your broadband subscription through Verizon.

Models Take to the Streets of Manhattan With Sony Vaios

Here's one way to draw attention to a product.

Here's one way to draw attention to a product. Take a group of hired models and dancers, arm them with Sony's clutch-sized Vaios — like the P Series Lifestyle PC — dress them in the clothes of emerging designers, parade them all around Manhattan, and what do you get? A brilliant marketing campaign by Sony.

The Wall Street Journal Blog notes how this joint fashion-tech campaign will kick off NY Fashion Week in a couple of weeks, with models wandering through the Bryant Park tent on Feb. 13 and 14. — still toting their Sony laptops.

And starting tomorrow, you'll be able to track the models and IM them from Sony's Go Lightly site. Sony will also be posting photos and videos from the campaign on YouTube, Flickr, and Facebook.

False Advertising? Sony Vaio P "Barely" Fits in Back Pocket

Tight squeeze, eh Sony?

Tight squeeze, eh Sony? Some new promo pics of the new VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC have enraged some Japanese bloggers who are ashamed by the ad's unrealistic size portrayal.

Considering it is the world's lightest 8-inch notebook, it's not totally outlandish to assume it might be able to fit in the pocket of a pair of jeans. But then again, Jimmy Fallon could barely fit it in his jacket pocket, which leads to me believe a pair of my hip hugging jeans would definitely be out of the question. What do you think? Are you more ticked off that it's not small enough to carry in a pocket, or are you peeved that the ad is inaccurate?
