Bike and Scooter Accessories For Kids

Now you're scootin! During a recent visit to camp, I couldn't help but notice the lineup of scooters parked just inside the main entrance. There must have been 20, and aside from a few that were marked with kids' names, it was virtually impossible to tell them apart. There's no question that tots love scooters as a fun alternative to walking or biking, and they're a great way to encourage exercise. Before parking your lil one's ride in a sea of Micros, Razors, and Kickboards, check out these fun accessories to make their scooter their own.

OnSugar Blog: Extreme Scootering

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and camilaruano is one of them.

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and camilaruano is one of them. This is the latest post to her I'm So Stylish blog.

I have been know to say that I wanted surfer/skater kids. Children who think out of the box, that push the limits, that are fearless. When Sophia was 18 months old she could scale a rock climbing wall that was suggested for 6-11-year-olds. At a year old, Gabriel would crawl to the crushing waves of the ocean until the waves soaked him. I am constantly looking for toys and equipment to challenge my kids.

Sophia who is almost four and Gabriel who is two, both have Mini Kick Scooters — the ultimate in scooters! Its intuitive design is brilliant. The Mini Kick's unique "lean and steer " allows the children to maneuver the Mini Kick with their body weight from side to side, surfing the sidewalks! The three wheel design is unmatched and provides stability and control with two wheels in the front and the single spooner provides extra control and is great for dramatic effect. I could go on forever... Sophia has already mastered some amazing tricks from this well engineered scooter. It's crazy how fast she can go and make an immediate brake so smoothly. Gabriel is working on a whole set of tricks of his own. These scooters are a must! It has been amazing for both of my kids confidence. Don't be deterred by the suggested age (3-5). Gabriel got his Mini Kick when he was just turning two. It's been so awesome watching the different ways they have mastered it!

Piaggio MP3 Hybrid: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

Scooters are an awesome alternative to cars for city driving.

Scooters are an awesome alternative to cars for city driving. They're better on gas, and they take up much less room, which equals more parking options!

Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio not only produces some of the coolest scoots on the planet (Vespa anyone?), but now they're getting their green on again with the MP3 Hybrid scooter, which was recently unveiled at the International Motorcycle Expo in Italy. The MP3 Hybrid will be the second scooter from Piaggio, with their HyS model already in production.

Although it doesn't have many geek-chic amenities like the name suggests, you will get about 141 miles per gallon and go from zero to 60 in five seconds! Adding to the distance will be regenerative breaking — each time you push on the breaks it recharges the battery. I'm totally digging the concept (especially where my wallet is concerned), but I'm still not sure if the three-wheel design is more poindexter than scooter babe. What do you think?

Please Help the Purloined Pug!

Now, when I first heard the story about missing Scooter in late December, I had no idea the twist it would take.

Now, when I first heard the story about missing Scooter in late December, I had no idea the twist it would take. For those of you not familiar with the case, this Pug apparently dug the way out of his Dallas backyard on Christmas Eve and when his owners, Rob and Kim Velevis, returned home from running errands . . . there was no doggie. The awful twist here is that, shortly after the new year, they received a typewritten letter (postmarked from Tulsa) telling them that a woman in fact had their dog (and their address from his collar), but decided to give the dog to her daughter, and included $20 to thank them. The couple is offering to buy the girl her own dog in exchange for getting their loved one back and have created this email account (bringscooterhome@gmail.com) for any tips. I can't even articulate how upset this story makes me, so I've included a clip of their heartbreaking news appearance when you read more

Eco Geek Chic: Hybrid Scooter

While sales of hybrid vehicles continue to rise there are some places where even hybrid vehicles can feel excessive and over sized.

While sales of hybrid vehicles continue to rise there are some places where even hybrid vehicles can feel excessive and over sized. Luckily, Piaggio has announced a HyS, which is a “parallel” hybrid scooter in which a combustion engine and an electric motor are mechanically and electronically linked and simultaneously supply power to the wheel.

In this linked gas/electric engine, the gasoline engine behaves like a normal catalysed four-stroke engine with excellent performance and distance range on the one hand and low emissions and fuel consumption on the other. Due to its "parallel" status, the hybrid scooter will be allowed into the restricted traffic zones in most cities and is still perfect for travel out of town.

Piaggio HyS will look like the well known Vespa LX, Piaggio X8 or MP3 models and will feature a battery charge indicator on the dashboard. The battery can be recharged from an electricity source by inserting a normal cable into the plug provided for this purpose. Charging time is about three hours. If that isn't geek chic, I don't know what is.
