Casa Quickie: Camouflage Your Big Screen

I'm blown away by the recently completed loft of budding 24-year-old interior designer Chris Cushingham.

I'm blown away by the recently completed loft of budding 24-year-old interior designer Chris Cushingham. Industrial to the core, its furnishings are made mostly of materials the rest of us would pass up, such as corrugated cardboard, raw wood, plumbing conduit, shipping pallets, and burlap sacks. There's no doubt that Cushingham is one clever lad.

My favorite element of the apartment is how he maximized his space by hanging a pull-down projection screen from his bookshelf (which he DIY'd out of wood and conduit). Not only is there no bulky television screen hogging up prime storage space, but he also went even further to set a pair of mirrors there to visually expand the room. If small square footage is one of your decorating dilemmas, consider picking up a projector and screen to make the most of what you've got. In fact, if your walls are white, you'll only need a projector and you'll be well on your way to life as a savvy small-space dweller!

If you have a lil scientist or artist on your hands, perhaps you should arrange to have one of these Kid O kid-friendly projectors ($60) on tap. Wee ones can take their artwork or local finds and place them under the simple white machine for a big screen adventure on their own bedroom wall. Magnifying the image five times, youngsters can marvel at the magnificent colors of a stargazer's petals or create a slideshow to share with their families. Mom and Dad, bust out the popcorn and get a front row seat for the best show in the house!
