Casa Beta: Philips LivingColors LED Lamp

Whenever I fly Virgin America, I can't wait to board and step into the hazy glow of the plane's purple lights — the lighting equivalent of an Ambien — close my eyes, and dream my way to my destination.

Whenever I fly Virgin America, I can't wait to board and step into the hazy glow of the plane's purple lights — the lighting equivalent of an Ambien — close my eyes, and dream my way to my destination. Well now, thanks to Philips LivingColors LED Lamp ($199), which the brand sent me to review, I can enjoy ambient, colored lighting without the hassle of airport security.

The small floor or table lamp has a bulbous shape much like my groovy, modern globe lamp, and is available with a transparent, white, or black exterior. I received the clear base, which almost looks like a speaker.

The lamp plugs into a standard outlet, and comes with a cute little remote control with a color dial. As you run your finger around the intuitive touch dial, you make your choice of any literally color on the color spectrum. Beyond that, four little buttons allow you to create deeper or softer saturation, and brighter or darker light intensity. These controls combined allow you to take your pick of 16 million different color choices — as many colors as a 24-bit RGB computer monitor can simulate.

So those are the specs, want to hear what I really think of it?

Love at First Sight With Philips Network Music Player NP2500

During my adventures at the Philips event in Portugal last week, I was introduced to this tiny yet mighty device — the Streamium Network Music Player. As much as I was drooling over the touchscreen Prestigo universal remote (review on the way!), I must say that this player stole my heart. At home, I usually connect my laptop to my home stereo system to listen to tunes, or else I pop my iPod on my portable stereo's dock. The first one is usually a hassle (stereo must be changed from TV to AUX, volume must be adjusted on both laptop and stereo, etc.), and the latter usually offers a temporary fix since the sound quality isn't that great.

But now my friends, there's the Streamium network music player NP2500 which will wirelessly playback all of your tunes from your laptop or PC, and stream Internet radio stations (thousands of stations worldwide), all while utilizing the device's FullSound technology (which makes the sound amazing). The player shows off full album art in full color and you can control the player with the included remote control.

You can currently pick one up on sale from Dell for $162.

Philips New Tapster Is As Cool As It Sounds

Last week at the Philips event in Portugal, I got to check out innovative new products like the Prestigo remote and like this new device — the Philips Tapster. In the video below you'll get a sneak peek at how it functions, but basically with this Bluetooth stereo headset, you can easily switch between your music and incoming phone calls by using simple gestures. With stellar sound quality, a comfortable feel when on the ear, and crystal clear reception, this is going to be one hot little product when it's released later this year.

Philips Announces a New Universal Remote: The Prestigo

As a guest of Philips at their digital media event in Portugal this week, I was fortunate to feast my eyes on so many great new products — one of which includes an impressive new universal remote control. Stay tuned for the full review when I take it for a test drive, but for now I wanted to be sure to pass along some of its awesome features. Named the Prestigo STR9320, this glossy black remote puts other all-in-one remotes to shame.

The 2.8-inch touch-sensitive color screen is impressive in and of itself, but what I was really swooning over was its ability to program 20 devices. At first I thought, yeah, like it's going to be compatible with my stereo and DVR player, but the Prestigo is compatible with over 300,000 devices (with 10,000 more available online that can be downloaded via USB). I was also told that setup is fairly simple (unlike the headache other universal remotes usually are), and you can even create a "favorite channel list" so you don't have to remember that MTV is on channel 302, or that your movie channel is 707 (that is, if you use a cable box like me that has upwards of 500 channels), and of course, that makes this feature great for kids.

And you know how you're usually fumbling for batteries when your remote dies? The SRT9320 comes with rechargeable batteries and a main charger adapter, so you can kiss your battery woes good-bye! The Prestigo will be hitting stores by the end of March.

Would You Take a Camera Pill?

I'd need more than a spoonful of sugar to help gulp down the camera pill that Philips is introducing. The smart pill would be taken with water and, once inside, would release a targeted amount of medicine.

I'm not cavalier about things I'll ingest, but if my doctor said it was cool, I think I'd be intrigued to swallow it. So far, it's just for digestive disorders, but can you imagine where this could go?

Would you be afraid to take a camera pill, or would it be just another prescription to swallow?
