Pantone Goes For the Green With Its 2013 Color of the Year

Tell your tangerine (2012's Pantone color of the year) to tango right out the door, because the color experts at Pantone have just named emerald the 2013 color of the year. Described as lively, radiant, and lush, the color was seen on the runways of Stella McCartney (eyeliner), Christian Dior (eye shadow), Marimekko (eye shadow), and Kenzo (nails and eye shadow, pictured above). "Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal, and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world," Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said. "This powerful and appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors."

Emerald is such a versatile color because it's a new kind of neutral. It works well in both warm and cool temperatures, and pops on a variety of different skin tones and eye colors. Wear it with peach, rose, or aubergine for a complementary effect, or swipe on your nails when you need a color boost, but don't want something too overpowering. In addition, just as Sephora and Pantone linked up for 2012 with its Sephora + Pantone color collection, the beauty brands will be at it again for 2013; look for the launch of the line exclusively at Sephora this March.

Learning More About Tangerine Tango, Pantone's Color of the Year: An Interview With Leatrice Eiseman

Each year Pantone, the global authority on color, reveals its choice for the color of the year, signaling the color direction for interior design, fashion, cosmetics, and graphic design. This year, the color is Tangerine Tango, a vibrant shade that will breathe new life into 2012's color palettes. I recently chatted with Pantone's resident color guru, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, about what the color means for the new year. Let's learn more about Tangerine Tango!

CasaSugar: Were there any major influences that contributed to Pantone's decision on Tangerine Tango for 2012?
Leatrice Eiseman: The Color of the Year selection process is very thoughtful and time consuming. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone quite literally combs the world looking for color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films that are in production, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations, and other socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, availability of new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.

CS: What colors do you suggest pairing Tangerine Tango with?
LE: It goes well with many colors that make for unexpected combinations. For example, pair it with an elegant wine color, such as Syrah or a Rhubarb Red. It's great with a slightly greenish blue, like Vallarta, or a hot pink called Cabaret for a retro look. Of course, it's always great with warm taupey tans like Tiger's Eye, and a special favorite of mine is a deep yellow green called Winter Moss. And there is the summertime staple of White Alyssum and Tangerine Tango.

Fire Things Up With Pantone's 2012 Color of the Year

The color experts and trend forecasters at Pantone have just named Tangerine Tango the 2012 color of the year.

The color experts and trend forecasters at Pantone have just named Tangerine Tango the 2012 color of the year. "Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy," the institute's Leatrice Eiseman said in a statement. We saw the vivid hue all over the runways at Spring 2012 Fashion Week, with shows such as Jason Wu (lipstick), Chris Benz (lipstick), Milly (nails), and Joy Cioci (lipstick and blush, pictured above) featuring the reddish-orange shade.

Why is this color so versatile? It can look fresh practically anywhere on the face, including the cheeks and eyes. It also makes blue and green eyes pop and gives brown eyes an amber tone. Look forward to the release of a Pantone-branded makeup line in March — featuring the red-hot color, naturally.
