OLPC Sending the XO to Haiti to Aid Reconstruction

The OLPC XO is Haiti-bound.

The OLPC XO is Haiti-bound. A "ruggedized" version of the Linux-based machine — which is already in the hands of millions of children around the world — is being sent to reconstruction groups who are helping to rebuild the destroyed cities of Haiti after last week's earthquake. This isn't the first high-tech way we've seen aid flow to the country — you can also buy apps and donate your old cell phones for the cause as well.

Humanitarian and reconstruction groups are invited to request the laptops with an application, and can also request solar-charging backpacks to recharge the machines and other devices.

Laptops & Role Playing: Is Technology the Answer to Poverty?

Though Dungeons and Dragons has weirdly wormed its way into the campaign, technology is popping up worldwide as not an escape from the drudgery of every day, but as an escape from poverty.

Though Dungeons and Dragons has weirdly wormed its way into the campaign, technology is popping up worldwide as not an escape from the drudgery of every day, but as an escape from poverty. Laptops and role-playing games are a double click of cure.

One Laptop Per Child, a program designed to bring technology and opportunity to kids in developing nations has completely fulfilled that mission in the tiny South Pacific island of Niue. Every single kid, 100 percent of them, now has access to the Internet on the inexpensive, rugged, waterproof (and pretty cute!) laptops. Though Niue is a developing nation, they've been ahead of the technology curve — in 2003 they were the first territory to offer free wireless to all residents.

Just when I hardly hear anything for months about the One Laptop Per Child project, Microsoft decides to team up with OLPC to add Windows XP to the XO laptops.

Just when I hardly hear anything for months about the One Laptop Per Child project, Microsoft decides to team up with OLPC to add Windows XP to the XO laptops. Machines running Windows will be available by August or September, with some machines available as early as next month. XO laptop users will also have the ability to host both Windows and Linux operating systems on their machines. Even with OLPC's director of security architecture Ivan Krstic resigning earlier this year, the company may make a big comeback with this latest addition. To see the XO laptop in action with Windows, check out the video below.

Or you can check out the video below which features a nine-year-old boy giving his enthusiastic review of the bright green and white innovative laptop. Masi Oka's Ad Appeals to One Laptop Per Child Donors

The One Laptop Per Child project, an effort to provide $100 computers to children in developing countries, has been in the works for some time, but a recent publicity campaign has catapulted the project into the mainstream.

The One Laptop Per Child project, an effort to provide $100 computers to children in developing countries, has been in the works for some time, but a recent publicity campaign has catapulted the project into the mainstream. The OLPC has released an ad featuring Heroes star and former Geek of the Week Masi Oka. In it Masi implores the public to purchase and donate computers to children in need.

"Imagine that you give a laptop to a child and that one child can come up with these great ideas," Oka says in the video. "We can give them the power to learn. The power to connect with all ideas around the world. Imagine the difference we can make."

Between Nov. 12 and 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate the XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution.
