MapQuest: Yet Another iOS 6 Maps Alternative

MapQuest Map Alternative For iPhone

Last Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized to iOS 6 users for the failure of the new native Maps application to, well, work properly. There was one thing that caught our eye in Tim's note — a nod to competitors as an alternative to Apple's faulty map app.

Included in the list was: Google and Nokia Maps (the usual suspects); Bing (which we took for a spin last week); and a more curious recommendation — MapQuest. The web mapping service, which launched in 1996, hasn't been on our radar for a few years, but we decided to give MapQuest's mobile app another shot. What we found was a mix of '90s nostalgia and unexpectedly useful discovery tools. Here are the pros and cons of MapQuest's eccentric mobile map app.

MapQuest Launches a New iPhone 4 Mobile Version

Is it bad I sometimes forget that MapQuest exists?

Is it bad I sometimes forget that MapQuest exists? I guess since I'm such an avid Google Maps user, I really don't find the need to use other online mapping tools.

But MapQuest isn't going away anytime soon, and with their new MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone app, there are actually some features worth checking out. Although MapQuest 4 Mobile isn't going to replace a GPS service like Tom Tom for the iPhone, it does show nice turn-by-turn directions when you are holding your phone in landscape mode. You can also add multiple stops quite easily with its intuitive interface and swipe the screen left or right to advance to the next direction.

Mapquest Gets an Upgrade

I remember when I first started using MapQuest years ago.

I remember when I first started using MapQuest years ago. Being able to type in an origin and destination and receive directions always amazed me. I especially loved not having to configure my own route on a traditional paper map. Then came the release of Google Maps, a much more advanced web mapping service application than MapQuest. According to The Boy Genius Report, MapQuest has just unveiled a new beta version of their mapping software to compete with Google Maps. The beta version now comes with a saved and recent searches window, an option to add multiple stops, expanding side bars and more. Sorry, no cool street view fun.
