iWant: Landing Zone's Laptop-to-Desktop Transformer

The MacBook Air is a lightweight traveler's dream come true — but sometimes, we'd like to give our ultrathin laptops a little extra oomph.

The MacBook Air is a lightweight traveler's dream come true — but sometimes, we'd like to give our ultrathin laptops a little extra oomph. The LandingZone is a MacBook accessory that does just that, with a security slot, extra USB ports, an Ethernet port, mini display port, power adapter, and a MagSafe power pass-through.

Peripherals are moved to the back rather than the sides, giving mobile work warriors just a little extra room. The LandingZone comes in three models:

  • 1.0 Pro ($180) — MacBook Air models 2010 to mid-2012 will fit this accessory. It includes a 10/100 Ethernet port and four USB 2.0 slots.
  • 2.0 Pro ($200) — For MacBook Air models released June 2012. There is a gigabit Ethernet port and four USB 3.0 ports.
  • 2.0 Lite ($99) — This model (for June 2012 MacBook Airs) has everything in the pro version, minus two USB ports, the Ethernet port, and power adapter.

Our only reservation about the LandingZone is its price — the device is pretty expensive. But the high-speed-charging USB ports for juicing up tablets or smartphones are really handy, and the security slot and extra peripherals are great for using the MacBook Air in a work-from-anywhere office.

MacBook Pro With Retina Drops $200

The joy of Spring just came early: Apple dropped the price of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, and SSD storage upgrade, and boosted the processing power of the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

The joy of Spring just came early: Apple dropped the price of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, and SSD storage upgrade, and boosted the processing power of the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

The 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro with 2.5Ghz dropped $200, making it the same price as the 2.9GHz non-Retina version.

  • 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is $1,499 for 128GB of flash and 2.5GHz (originally $1,699).
  • 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is $1,699 for 256GB of flash and 2.6GHz (originally $1,999).
    • This version previously had 2.5GHz, so you're saving money on a processor upgrade as well.

The MacBook Air is also getting more affordable. A 13-inch Air with 256GB of flash and 1.8GHz is now $1,399 (originally $1,499).

Upgrading your computer's storage capacity got cheaper, too. Increasing SSD storage to 512GB is now an additional $300 (originally $500) and to 768GB is $700 (originally $1,000).

The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina didn't see a price drop, but it did get more powerful for the same price. It now comes with a 2.4GHz quad-core processor, and the high-end model now comes with a 2.7GHz quad-core processor.

Just picked up a new Apple laptop for the original price? Don't worry — Apple has a 14-day return and refund policy.

15-Inch MacBook Air? Yes, Please

Rumor has it, Apple is testing a 15-inch MacBook Air-like laptop to be released sometime next year.

Rumor has it, Apple is testing a 15-inch MacBook Air-like laptop to be released sometime next year. If size matters to you when it comes to your laptop (of course it does), but you aren't into the smaller 11- or 13-inch screen sizes of the current MacBook Air lineup, this version could be for you.

Although it's unclear whether the laptop will be a MacBook Air or a lighter MacBook Pro (possibly without an optical drive), a bigger screen on an ultralight body would be a welcome addition to business travelers who need more desktop real estate.

If you've been itching to trade in your clunky machine to buy one of Apple's ultrathin laptops, you may want to hold off just a bit longer. New reports say that Apple is expected to refresh both the 13-, and 11-inch MacBook Airs this Summer — likely June or July — which is less than a year after the newly revamped models were introduced last October.

The hardware refresh should include new and super-fast Sandy Bridge chips and Thunderbolt ports for fast data transfers.

Will 3G Access Come Standard in Future MacBook Airs?

Looks like Apple's MacBook Air may join the ranks of other ultra-portable laptops that come straight outta the box with the ability to access 3G signals from a wireless provider.

Looks like Apple's MacBook Air may join the ranks of other ultra-portable laptops that come straight outta the box with the ability to access 3G signals from a wireless provider. A new survey has been sent to current MacBook Air owners that gauges interest in 3G connections and asks about data usage and storage. If the MacBook Air does end up getting 3G access, it could compete with Apple's already-popular (and celebrity-endorsed) iPad 3G. Why get a tablet when you can get a full-fledged computer?

There have been lots of rumors floating around about big-time changes coming to Apple's iPhone line (including an iPhone Nano and a totally revamped iPhone 5, to be exact), so the MacBook Air could just be one of many adjustments we see Apple making to its popular products.
