Will You Be Canceling Your Cable or Satellite Subscription This Year?

So, let's see. You've set up your new HDTV and now you're ready to start reaping the high-definition rewards.

So, let's see. You've set up your new HDTV and now you're ready to start reaping the high-definition rewards. If you're like many, that doesn't mean upgrading your cable package; instead, according to the Los Angeles Times, this is the year that many will forgo cable and satellite altogether in favor of Internet-connected TV.

The availability of traditional network and cable TV shows on the web is ever-increasing, and there are already several options to choose from for hassle-free streaming. And with CES promising to cast some spotlight onto new Internet streaming devices (including Microsoft's rumored answer to Google TV) and web-capable TVs, the general public may be ready to cut the cord in order to save money. What about you: will you be saying goodbye to cable or satellite this year?

Samsung Announces 3D TVs, Starter Kits, and App Store

It was a big morning for Samsung — not only did it announce that its first HD 3D TVs will hit shelves this month, but it will also be rolling out 3D-ready Blu-Ray players, will be launching an app store for your home theater, and is partnering with DreamWorks to bring you some extra movie-watching goodies.

First up are the TVs. Samsung's lineup of HD 3D LED TVs will go on sale this month, starting with a few 46 inch and 55 inch screens, while the remaining LED and plasmas will roll out over the next several months alongside its Blu-Ray players. All of Samsung's new 3D TVs will come stocked with Real240Hz refresh rates for the clearest picture without blur and drag. Additionally, if you purchase a new 3D TV and Blu-Ray player, you'll get a starter kit that includes two pairs of Samsung 3D glasses (sold separately for $150) and a copy of Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D to kick-start your home theater experience.

Get Your Boxee Box in 2010

Although Hulu didn't get behind Boxee like I'd hoped (and will be implementing its own subscription service soon), we can still look forward to the sleek and stylish Boxee Box which will hit the shelves in 2010.

Although Hulu didn't get behind Boxee like I'd hoped (and will be implementing its own subscription service soon), we can still look forward to the sleek and stylish Boxee Box which will hit the shelves in 2010. Streaming all your online TV, movies, videos, as well as files and apps from your own personal hard drive, the Boxee Box pretty much eliminates the need to use your PC or laptop to watch online content.

Just download the free Boxee software, register your account, then connect the Boxee Box to your TV. No need for a keyboard to surf around either — with its integrated menu and remote, you just need a few clicks to be on your way. Plus, the Boxee Box hooks up to your hi-def TV with just a simple cable. I couldn't find a price on the site yet, but keep an eye out for the Boxee Box hitting shelves in early 2010.

Website of the Day: WeNeedGirlfriends

Single this Valentine's Day?

Single this Valentine's Day? Looking for a geek? I found three eligible ones on WeNeedGirlfriends.tv. OK, so they're actors in an online show and not really looking for girlfriends, but they're hilarious, geeky, and terminally single. If Flight of the Conchords mated with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you'd have this show. It's centered on Rod, Tom, and Henry and their life as three guys in New York who completely lack the ability to get girls.

You can watch a whole season on the website and catch up with the show on MySpace, but if you prefer your watching it on the TV, then you're in luck! Darren Star, creator of Sex and the City, is bringing WeNeedGirlfriends to CBS (hurrah for the end of the strike!). Get in on the show now before everyone else knows about it!

My favorite line? "If we're gonna make any progress in dating, we're gonna have to probably take our MySpace accounts more seriously."

WiTV: Wireless Internet TV Gets Taken For A Test Drive

Considering the fact I spend three quarters of my day online (it's pitiful, but true), I'm trying to adjust to the idea of watching TV programs via the net rather than my standard couch potato/laptop in lap method.

Considering the fact I spend three quarters of my day online (it's pitiful, but true), I'm trying to adjust to the idea of watching TV programs via the net rather than my standard couch potato/laptop in lap method. With services like Joost and networks such as ABC offering streamed shows online, TV on the net is definitely becoming more mainstream and enjoyable for the viewer. The latest addition to this growing trend is a cool new service called WiTV - "Wireless Internet TV"- which works via your web browser and includes features like an integrated chat system that allows you to talk via IM and Skype with other viewers. The sneak peek also revealed basic video controls, a fluid bottom scrollbar for selecting various channels, and a history of videos that you have previously watched. One downfall is the fact that it lacks P2P technology, which may cause for major glitches later. via CrunchGear
