An Ultrasound on the Go: There'll Be an App For That!

Smartphones can do just about anything these days, including conducting a sonogram on an expectant mama!

Smartphones can do just about anything these days, including conducting a sonogram on an expectant mama! A Redmond, Washington-based company just received FDA approval to sell the world's first phone-based ultrasound system.

The MobiUS, which will be sold commercially to medical professionals, uses a Toshiba Windows Mobile-powered smartphone, the company's software, and an attached probe to conduct ultrasounds. The phone's cellular network and Wi-Fi capabilities then allow doctors to send the images to others, including family and friends. The company behind the phone hopes it will help provide medical care to pregnant women in remote areas.

Though ultrasound machines cannot be sold for personal use due to the "Tom Cruise law," I imagine it will only be a matter of time before parents try to buy a MobiUS!

Slightly bigger than a Mac Mini, the Zino starts at $230, and runs on Microsoft's Windows Vista. It's a Dell, so there are many options for customization; 10 interchangeable lids change its color and design; other options include a Blu-Ray player, up to 8GB of memory, and up to a 1TB hard drive.

Have You Ever Put Your Own Pic on Your Computer Desktop?

At right is an image from this month's Harper's Bazaar featuring Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi.

At right is an image from this month's Harper's Bazaar featuring Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi. Beautiful home, beautiful woman, and she appears to know it: She has a portrait of herself above her bed, and to my surprise, a rather glam digital portrait of herself on her computer's desktop, seen here.

I have put photos of myself and other people on my desktop, but I don't think I would like to see a picture of myself gazing sexily at me when I'm using my computer. But maybe it's a good affirmation for some — or is it overblown narcissism?

Do you ever put pictures of just yourself on your desktop?

Geek Out: What's Your Desktop Wallpaper?

I love seeing the offices of design mavens because they inevitably have some fabulous desktop wallpaper on the screen for the photo op, always something that complements the rest of the design of the office.

I love seeing the offices of design mavens because they inevitably have some fabulous desktop wallpaper on the screen for the photo op, always something that complements the rest of the design of the office.

Case in point: Making it Lovely's Nicole shared her office recently, and my eye gravitated immediately to her Mac and the art on her desktop, the colors of which coordinate with the dominant pinks and reds of her office space.

I too enjoy a pretty, serene wallpaper as the setting for the madness that takes place on top of it; right now I can't seem to shake the Kaiku Marimekko pattern. Other times, I want to see a family pic stretched across my monitor, and sometimes I crave a simple, solid color to calm me. And I am not opposed to a really high-res photo of a flower (shoot, I am a girl).

But I'm curious about everyone else, since I think your computer's desktop wallpaper says a lot about you; What's yours?

Laptop vs. Desktop: Where Do You Sit?

I haven't purchased a desktop in the past ten years.

I haven't purchased a desktop in the past ten years. Considering how much I love to travel and the type of work I do I can't imagine having to sit in the same place every time I use the computer. Still, I completely understand that some people need the added memory and "power" of a desktop. That being said, the popularity of wireless Internet, docking stations and affordable laptops have made this a very portable world. Think I'm kidding? According to a recent Los Angeles Times article, "In the contest between PCs and laptops, an open-and-shut case," last year, for the first time, American consumers bought more of them than desktops. Sixteen of the twenty bestselling PCs on Amazon.com this holiday season were laptops. So where do you sit?

Best of Plushie Cell Phone Holders

Accessory makers are churning out plushies — small stuffed animals or characters — so fast that even the most serious fanatic can't keep up.

Accessory makers are churning out plushies — small stuffed animals or characters — so fast that even the most serious fanatic can't keep up. While I don't see any purpose in collecting regular plushies, I have fallen for the cell phone holders, which make fun desktop accessories.

I'm currently in love with the Plushie cell phone holder by Bale Living. It comes in pink, blue, green and orange and costs 4.95.

Most plushies are inexpensive so when it comes to purchasing one you should pick bright colors that will add a youthful flare to your desktop and cheer you up. If you get sick of it you can always get a new one, or pass it on to a kid. Check out the widget of my favorite plushies below.
