Homeland Security Will Send Alerts Via Facebook and Twitter: Good Idea or Bad?

It's not the sexiest thing to think about, but the Department of Homeland Security is revamping its warning notification system (no more color coding), and is planning to include Facebook and Twitter alerts.

It's not the sexiest thing to think about, but the Department of Homeland Security is revamping its warning notification system (no more color coding), and is planning to include Facebook and Twitter alerts. Starting April 27, there will be only two threat levels: elevated and imminent. Details on the exact method of notification are a bit unclear, but according to officials, the services will be used when appropriate.

Given that so many Americans get their news via Facebook and Twitter, this seems like a no-brainer. Critics worry that the mass notification will spread unnecessary fear; I think that it's a smart way to keep everyone informed and as safe as possible.

Where Are You Most Likely to Get Your News Online?

Though it was nearly a year ago, hearing anything about Michael Jackson's death makes me think about the claim that many tech-savvy people get their news from Twitter — or at least learn about breaking news from there.

Though it was nearly a year ago, hearing anything about Michael Jackson's death makes me think about the claim that many tech-savvy people get their news from Twitter — or at least learn about breaking news from there. But I can't think of too many news stories that I first spotted on Twitter since then. While it's true that Twitter streams are a good way to share information fast, new research suggests people are not getting news from Twitter after all. According to the report, young people are more likely to get their news from Google News or Facebook. Could it have anything to do with constant silly or non-newsworthy trending topics like #justinbieber?

It's only a matter of time until new research claims new top online sources for news, so I'm curious where you prefer to find news online.

Get Daily Weather Forecasts Right on Your Cell Phone

I ran into a little problem the other day.

I ran into a little problem the other day. To make a long story short, I overestimated how warm the weather was going to be and froze my butt off at work. I'm sure by taking one look at my Summer attire, FabSugar must have wondered if I had paid attention to the frigid forecast — which I didn't — but boy did I learn my lesson. I've become a bit reliant on Umbrella Today for notifications on my cell when it's going to rain, so after my error in weather judgment, I've decided to take action.

The Weather Channel has a weather alert service that can either (or both) text you or email you the weather forecast each day. Just enter your location, phone number, and what time you want your alert delivered, so you'll never get caught out in the cold again!

I want to get a show of hands here — how many of you pick up your cell phones as soon as you land at a destination?

I want to get a show of hands here — how many of you pick up your cell phones as soon as you land at a destination? A majority of us, right? Geesh, remember the days when cell phones didn't exist and the person picking you up at the airport would have to assume your flight was on time and therefore sit and wait to only realize it was delayed by five hours? Texting and calling "the chosen one" who got the lucky task of picking us up at the airport may be sufficient, but I'm all about simplifying my life even more and now there's ArrivedOK to help me in my quest.

ArrivedOK acts as an international flight tracker and will allow you to input your flight with the destination airport, expected arrival time, and the phone number and emails of the person(s) picking you up at the airport. This amazing site/service will shoot them a message as soon as you land by detecting that your phone has been turned on. The subscriber's phone must be registered with a local GSM network to work.

Getting email alerts for all of the things I'm interested in is great because, quite honestly, I do not have time to constantly monitor and collect information on a variety of topics.

I've already introduced you to Alerts.com, Shopping Notes and the Sale Alerts feature on ShopStyle, but what if you need alerts on things like traffic, earthquakes, or new YouTube videos? Then there's this great site called Alertpedia, which I saw on Makeuseof. Alertpedia will send you an email alert (you decide how often) about your specified topic.

But a girl gets busy, real busy, especially at this time of the year with work, parties, shopping, and traveling. There are times when I remember that I need to do something, but don't have time to add it to my calendar, and that's when a site called Remindr becomes my savior. With the self-explanatory Remindr, you just enter the goods, and it works its magic and does the rest. That wine you were supposed to pick up for the Christmas party tonight?
