The Viral Videos US Cities Can't Stop Watching

Vampires, the US just does not know how to quit you.

Vampires, the US just does not know how to quit you. Across all age groups, the gripping trailer for True Blood season six is the most shared video in America, according to YouTube's new Trends Map, which reveals web videos gone viral around the country.

YouTube is visualizing its data about viewers — whether they're male or female, their age, where they're based, what they're watching, and how they're sharing — and making that information available to other YouTube users, to help them discover the top viral video sensations hitting the web over the last 12 to 24 hours.

Toggling between different filters reveals really interesting habits among different age groups and markets around the country. For both male and female viewers in all age groups, Corgi puppy and the Scary Spoon is the most shared video in Tucson, AZ — but nowhere else. Change the filter from "Both" to "Male," and many of the most popular videos will flip over to display The Morgue scene from Family Guy as the No. 1 hit.

The US-only map is a spinoff of the YouTube Trends Dashboard, which has even more advanced filters that display what's popular in other countries and comparisons between different parameters like age and location. Poke around and see what other YouTube users in Fort Lauderdale, FL; Boise, ID; and Seattle, WA, are clicking on. Are you surprised by what you find?

How to Link to the Best Part of a YouTube Video

Twenty minutes into The xx's set at Coachella 2013, the English indie pop band busted into Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire" then brought out none other than Solange to finish the epic cover.

Twenty minutes into The xx's set at Coachella 2013, the English indie pop band busted into Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire" then brought out none other than Solange to finish the epic cover. In times like these, it's appropriate to just skip ahead to the best part (in this case, 20:26). On YouTube, there are three easy ways to share a link to a specific time in a video.

  • Manually — Add "&t=XmYs" to any YouTube URL, and put the desired minute for X and seconds for Y.
  • From YouTube — On the YouTube page itself, click on the "Share" tab below the video player. Next to the URL, check off "Start at," which will add a time code to the end of the URL.
  • In YouTube comments — When responding to a video using the comment box, any time stamp mentioned in your response will become a hyperlink to that point in the video. For example, "Solange rocked it at 20:24!"

Fast and Furious: Instant Video With the YouTube Capture App

This year, a major trend in mobile apps was easy and fast content creation.

This year, a major trend in mobile apps was easy and fast content creation. Be it photos (Instagram), video (Viddy), or image editing (Snapseed), uploading media to the web has never been easier.

Google took notice and released a new native app called YouTube Capture for iOS (free), with an Android version on its way, letting mobile movie-makers record, upload, and repeat at turbo speed.

YouTube Capture starts taking footage right when it's opened and, when you're done, the video's directed to the in-app editor to be color-corrected, trimmed, or stabilized. The app is one of the simplest video editing apps we've used, requiring just a few clicks to make a video from beginning to end. Mobile movie-makers can even add a soundtrack provided by YouTube.

Currently, Apple users can upload videos to YouTube from the share button in their mobile libraries, but they can't edit or upload straight from the shooting screen, which is why Google's new app goes above and beyond Apple's default offerings. Give it a try; are you going to start shooting video with YouTube Capture?

Jourdan Dunn is working on an online cooking show that's named, brilliantly, Well Dunn With Jourdan Dunn.

The show will air on the recently launched YouTube channel for Life + Times, the lifestyle and culture website backed by rapper Jay-Z. While not much is known about Dunn's show, a spokesman described it as part of a catalog of programs about everything from "fashion, architecture, music, style, food, consumables, electronics, and so forth." Dunn expressed her excitement about the show on Monday, tweeting, "Can't wait for this!!!!"

Dunn must have known about the show for a few months now. In August, the model tweeted a picture of a plate of sweet and sour ribs with the caption, "To find out how I made them stay tune for the show #WellDunn."

She joins a proud tradition of models moonlighting as chefs. Carol Alt released a cookbook called Easy, Sexy, Raw earlier this year, and Lorraine Pascale — famous for becoming the first black British model on the cover of Elle — started hosting the show Baking Made Easy on BBC in January 2011. And who could forget that before she became America's home cooking authority of record, Martha Stewart modeled for Chanel?

Felicia Day Talks The Guild, iPhone Gaming, and Making It as a Geek Girl

Walk by actress Felicia Day at Comic-Con and you're sure to see the geek culture icon surrounded by fans — maybe even one dressed as Codex, her character on the long-running web series The Guild. After making her name on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Felicia launched the series in 2007 as an ode to her love of online role-playing games. The show returns for its sixth season today on the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel.

I caught up with the It girl of geek culture to talk the latest on The Guild, the rise of mobile gaming, and what it means to be a geek girl.

What's new in season six of The Guild?
I’m really excited about The Guild this season as far as Codex goes, because she starts to work at the game itself. And for those new to the show, if you start from season one, I know sometimes it can seem a little too "inside gamer-y" for people; so, season after season we’ve been broadening our scope. Geek culture has been broadening over the years, and people who aren’t necessarily MMO [massively multiplayer online role-playing games] players will really love this season.

Have you seen the online gaming world The Guild is based on change with the growth of social-media-based games?
I definitely think gaming is much more mainstream now because of social games as well as mobile games. People are casually playing a lot more games, and that's probably echoing up the gaming food chain. There are still your triple A titles that took five years of work, but a lot more people are considering gaming just a part of their lives. As the seasons of The Guild have gone on, the show has grown past just being about MMO players playing with each other online. The characters have full lives, and in season six, we see Codex go into the actual game to have a job for the first time; so it’s about expanding our world, which is an interesting parallel with gaming, as well.
