What Are Your Favorite WiFi Alternatives to Cafes?

Tech-savvy San Francisco, home of Sugar HQ, is a city full of WiFi for the asking. So if I'm at home doing work and need a change of scenery, I have many options to choose from. Cafes are normally the go-to option, but sometimes it's nice to change it up. A couple of weekends ago, for example, I did some (no-brainer!) work while enjoying a mimosa at my local bar. It was nice to be able to enjoy the sunny patio instead of being holed up at home, and I liked that the vibe felt more relaxed than at my normal cafe, where no matter what day it is you're bound to be surrounded by clattering keyboards and concentrating faces. When you can't take another cappuccino, where do you go to use WiFi?

Apple Removes WiFi Finders From the App Store

Apple recently banned apps it deems "too sexy" from the App Store — and now it's gotten rid of another category of applications: WiFi locators. Apps like WiFi Finder were purged from the store yesterday. The deleted apps were more than databases of known hotpots; they actually used the iPhone's WiFi sensors to detect nearby hotspots.

Unlike the sexy-apps ban, which bans applications that Apple deems too racy, this move is technically motivated. WiFi finders run using private APIs, a type of technology built into the iPhone that may be removed in subsequent phone updates. Maybe this move means Apple is readying itself to release the next generation iPhone. If you're upset about the loss of WiFi-detecting apps, don't worry: there are plenty of products (like this keychain) that can detect a wireless signal.

iPhone App You Need: WiFi Finder

I've done the old, desperate WiFi hunt, and it is not cool.

I've done the old, desperate WiFi hunt, and it is not cool. I appreciate and try to seek out any tips on finding free WiFi, so if an iPhone app can do it — for free, no less — then I am downloading that sucker immediately.

WiFi Finder is a free iPhone App that finds the nearest available WiFi, but it's not just limited to finding free connections, because sometimes you're in such need that you don't care if you have to pay.

But if you do only want to see the free WiFi, just tap the "Free Only" button and you'll see all your gratis options. Be it apps or WiFi, free is generally always a good thing.
