Tumblr of the Day: Charts, Bo, and GIFs From the White House

Breaking news: the White House is now tumbling through the time-space continuum!

Breaking news: the White House is now tumbling through the time-space continuum! Today, President Obama and crew joined Tumblr, where the White House will be posting officially sanctioned charts, inspirational quotes, pictures of dogs, and GIFs — just like the rest of us.

In its first tumble, the White House said it created a site on the blogging platform as a part of the president's commitment to making "this the most open and accessible administration in history." President Obama invites his fellow Americans to share and submit stories, questions, and tumbling suggestions.

We'll be anxiously awaiting more tumbles from the White House, but until then, follow POPSUGAR Tech on Tumblr for more of the Internet's most shareable finds!

Tumblr of the Day: Photography From the National Geographic Archives

For the past 125 years, the National Geographic Society has been a champion of scientific research and education.

For the past 125 years, the National Geographic Society has been a champion of scientific research and education. The nonprofit has amassed an incredible collection of photography in that time and, in honor of its milestone anniversary, it launched Found, a Tumblr dedicated to renewing (or publishing for the first time ever!) remarkable snaps from its expansive archives.

National Geographic's FOUND logo is as meaningful as it is beautiful. Charles E. Riddiford, a National Geographic cartographer in the '30s and '40s, designed the typeface of the logo, Ludwig Light.

FOUND's photos tell remarkable stories of a world before the Internet, smartphones, and 24/7 connectivity. In the image above from February 1955, children play in an oceanside pool (now, that sounds like a fine idea).

The unbelievable photo below from 1938 shows three irresistible kittens inspecting a grouper at Marineland.

William Bonner, also known as "Guardian of the Collection" among Nat Geo folk, curates the photography archive in Washington DC. William wants to continue unearthing stories from the basement of the National Geographic headquarters, and is accepting any insights about the images at natgeofound@gmail.com.

Tumblr of the Day: What a Scientist Really Looks Like

Scientists are knowledge-seeking, fun-loving adventurers who have had a public image problem for far too long, and This Is What a Scientist Looks Like is a Tumblr dedicated to changing that stereotype once and for all.

Scientists are knowledge-seeking, fun-loving adventurers who have had a public image problem for far too long, and This Is What a Scientist Looks Like is a Tumblr dedicated to changing that stereotype once and for all.

The Tumblr, run by writer Allie Wilkinson, features experts of the natural, physical, and formal sciences who represent all walks of life. Follow the posts and you'll see: science professionals don't have wild, disheveled hair (that was just Einstein) and most don't even own a lab coat.

Take Michael Ferguson Frick, there on the left. The professor of herpetology (study of reptiles) at the Philadelphia Natural History Museum also happens to be a big fan of motorcycles.

And, on the right, there's Kate, a postdoctoral scholar who uses geochemistry to determine what the climate was like way back when (uh, you rock Kate) and likes "hiking and good beer" as much as the next person.

Meet other Michaels and Kates changing the stereotype that scientists only work behind closed doors at lookslikescience.tumblr.com. If you're a scientist or science student who refuses to be pigeonholed, be sure to submit your name, photo, and bio to the site.

Tumblr of the Day: Hollywood Hits Before the Visual Effects

Without all the visual bells and whistles, most of today's box-office hits wouldn't be much more than a green screen.

Without all the visual bells and whistles, most of today's box-office hits wouldn't be much more than a green screen. Before VFX is a fascinating look at blockbuster films stripped down to their nondigitized essence and draws attention to a growing Tinseltown controversy over the outsourcing of visual effects jobs and the low pay to the companies responsible for this artistry.

The scientific and technical achievements of the film industry are lauded at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Sci-Tech Awards, which was hosted by Star Trek stars Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana this year. The Before VFX Tumblr reminds us how transformative that technology is, with posts of behind-the-scenes screen caps of sci-fi films like Tron and Watchmen, plus Oscar-winning titles like Life of Pi, a movie that finds itself at the center of the Hollywood dispute.

Life of Pi may have won the Best Visual Effects prize at this year's Oscars, but despite critical acclaim and box-office success, Rhythm & Hues, the LA-based visual effects studio behind the film, recently filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Many of the studio's technicians protested outside the Academy Awards to shed light on a complex trade issue: foreign subsidies from governments to studios in exchange for postproduction deals with visual effects companies overseas.

The voice of the visual effects industry will likely only grow louder, since Hollywood's biggest hits are so dependent on the group's technical skills. For more behind-the-scenes snaps, follow Before VFX — and, while you're at it, follow us on Tumblr, too, for more shareable Internet finds.

Tumblr of the Day: The Astronaut Tumbling From Space

Between living in the International Space Station, being an astronaut, and doing typical cool science things, flight engineer Chris Hadfield is a pretty busy guy.

Between living in the International Space Station, being an astronaut, and doing typical cool science things, flight engineer Chris Hadfield is a pretty busy guy. And yet, he finds the time to tumble, tweet, and live-stream lessons to students — from, you know, space!

The Canadian astronaut aboard Expedition 34 obviously has great time-management skills, and we couldn't be more grateful for giving us earthlings a look at life from above and inspiring a whole new generation of space-faring humans.

Chris, who went into orbit on Dec. 19, provides daily dispatches of gorgeous aerial views from around the world, including one of Saturday night in Washington DC during inaugural weekend and some interesting bits about life in zero gravity.

When Expedition 35 begins in March with the arrival of three new crew members, the tumbling Canadian astronaut will transition from flight engineer to commander. Chris doesn't return home until May, and we'll be following him and the rest of the crew all expedition long.

Tumblr of the Day: Daily Dishonesty

We're not sure what inspired designer Lauren Hom to hand-letter little white lies, but we do know one thing: her Daily Dishonesty Tumblr is hilarious — when it doesn't hit too close to home.

We're not sure what inspired designer Lauren Hom to hand-letter little white lies, but we do know one thing: her Daily Dishonesty Tumblr is hilarious — when it doesn't hit too close to home.

The New York City-based graphic illustrator and designer started the project during her senior year of college, combining typography, copywriting, humor, and illustration. The result? A quirky and refreshingly honest look at the ways we're dishonest every day. You can even buy a print ($18) of the lovely lies you're most guilty of.

If you're curious about the process, check out Lauren's tutorial on how she takes type designs from start to finish. For more clever Internet finds, follow us at our tumblehome: popsugartech.tumblr.com.

Tumblr of the Day: My Cardboard Life — a Cut-and-Paste Webcomic

Prepare for cute overload, netizens — My Cardboard Life is the most adorable webcomic about heavy-duty paper you will ever lay your eyes upon.

Prepare for cute overload, netizens — My Cardboard Life is the most adorable webcomic about heavy-duty paper you will ever lay your eyes upon. Cardboard Colin, Paper Pauline, Doctor Bandaid, Silvia Foil, and Steve Sponge are just your typical inanimate objects going through the everyday motions.

The comic's creator Philippa Rice is a female artist based in the UK, whose body of work ranges from carefully crafted paper pieces to intricate pen-and-ink drawings. Philippa arranges the panels of My Cardboard Life herself, photographs the collage strip, and finishes the comic with minimal editing before uploading it to the web.

Cardboard Colin and friends can be found on the web, where new strips are posted every weekday. They have a second home on Tumblr (just like us!) where you can find goodies like extras and behind-the-desk scenes.

The Hawkeye Initiative, Exposing Sexism in Comic Female Characters

The Hawkeye Initiative, a Tumblr that exploded overnight, might not be totally safe for work, but we blame that on the absurd character drawings of females in comic books past and present.

The Hawkeye Initiative, a Tumblr that exploded overnight, might not be totally safe for work, but we blame that on the absurd character drawings of females in comic books past and present.

The blog was based on a pithy, but impactful, suggestion by Tumblr user Gingerhaze that replacing female characters with The Avengers' Hawkeye would help expose the sexualization of women in comics and graphic novels.

And so, The Hawkeye Initiative was born to reveal how strong females in superhero comics are almost always depicted with both their backside and bosom on full display. The result is a funny visualization with a serious message. Hawkeye bends over backward, seductively swashbuckles, and overflexes his spine (you know, typical Wonder Woman stuff) like never before.

Girls in geekdom is a hot-button topic these days, and it extends beyond depictions in comic books. The Fake Geek Girl and Idiot Nerd Girl meme has brought up issues of misogyny and exclusion that have long plagued geek culture. Advocates for a more inclusionary culture include sci-fi writer John Scalzi, who wrote that whoever wants to be a geek, can be, and John Siracusa and Dan Benjamin, hosts of the influential tech podcast Hypercritical, who explained last week (discussion starts at 56:08) why women are shut out and why it should stop.

We know of another Tumblr that supports female geeks and techies — our own: popsugartech.tumblr.com. Follow our Tumblr, and tell us your stories of the trials, tribulations, and glory of what it's like to be a lady geek.

Tumblr of the Day: 9-Eyes, Unexpected Scenes From Google Street View

The Google Street View camera looks like a high-tech disco ball, with nine lenses aimed in every direction to capture all the world has to offer — including ATV street races, escaping inmates, and snow monkeys in hot springs.

The Google Street View camera looks like a high-tech disco ball, with nine lenses aimed in every direction to capture all the world has to offer — including ATV street races, escaping inmates, and snow monkeys in hot springs. Canadian artist Jon Rafman clicks his way through Google Street View, collecting the strangest, funniest, and most unexpected scenes on his Tumblr blog, 9-eyes.com.

It's a fascinating cross section of humanity and an interesting perspective on photography in the 21st century. Is the photographer the robot that automated the shutter click, or is it the human who gathered and curated those images into a collection?

The Street View vehicle fleet has logged over five million miles of open road around the world, not to mention a large chunk of the Amazon River and underwater panoramas of six of the ocean's living coral reefs. There are many more compelling images yet to be discovered, and we'll just have to stay tuned as Google adds even more miles to its Street View collection.
