Breaking news: the White House is now tumbling through the time-space continuum!

Breaking news: the White House is now tumbling through the time-space continuum! Today, President Obama and crew joined Tumblr, where the White House will be posting officially sanctioned charts, inspirational quotes, pictures of dogs, and GIFs — just like the rest of us.

In its first tumble, the White House said it created a site on the blogging platform as a part of the president's commitment to making "this the most open and accessible administration in history." President Obama invites his fellow Americans to share and submit stories, questions, and tumbling suggestions.

We'll be anxiously awaiting more tumbles from the White House, but until then, follow POPSUGAR Tech on Tumblr for more of the Internet's most shareable finds!

From Google Poems to Harry Potter Haikus, the Best Geeky Poetry

After The New York Times launched a haiku bot this week to transform its homepage stories to shortened 5-7-5 dispatches, we had to see if there were other poetry sources that could lead to hours of entertainment — and just in time, since April is National Poetry Month.

After The New York Times launched a haiku bot this week to transform its homepage stories to shortened 5-7-5 dispatches, we had to see if there were other poetry sources that could lead to hours of entertainment — and just in time, since April is National Poetry Month. The result: six sites you'll want to check while having your morning coffee, at lunch hour, after dinner — basically all day long. Don't believe us? Tumblr of the Day: Photography From the National Geographic Archives

For the past 125 years, the National Geographic Society has been a champion of scientific research and education.

For the past 125 years, the National Geographic Society has been a champion of scientific research and education. The nonprofit has amassed an incredible collection of photography in that time and, in honor of its milestone anniversary, it launched Found, a Tumblr dedicated to renewing (or publishing for the first time ever!) remarkable snaps from its expansive archives.

National Geographic's FOUND logo is as meaningful as it is beautiful. Charles E. Riddiford, a National Geographic cartographer in the '30s and '40s, designed the typeface of the logo, Ludwig Light.

FOUND's photos tell remarkable stories of a world before the Internet, smartphones, and 24/7 connectivity. In the image above from February 1955, children play in an oceanside pool (now, that sounds like a fine idea).

The unbelievable photo below from 1938 shows three irresistible kittens inspecting a grouper at Marineland.

William Bonner, also known as "Guardian of the Collection" among Nat Geo folk, curates the photography archive in Washington DC. William wants to continue unearthing stories from the basement of the National Geographic headquarters, and is accepting any insights about the images at natgeofound@gmail.com.

Tumblr's New Dashboard Is Built For Speed

Creating posts on Tumblr is already straightforward.

Creating posts on Tumblr is already straightforward. But the blogging platform's new dashboard design streamlines content creation even further, now letting users create posts without ever leaving their dashboards.

The new Tumblr experience is a lot like Facebook's Status Update/Add Photo window at the top of the news feed or the tweet composer built in to the Twitter Timeline. Social media platforms are trying to make the user experience as time-saving and efficient as possible, to encourage users to create more content and engage with their communities.

Tumblr's been quite the busybody lately, having released long-awaited mobile optimization for the iPad, support for Android devices, and a brand-new photo app within the last couple of months. Most recently, the platform introduced a special panorama viewing feature, with a neat interactive slider that pans the image up close.

Do you have a blog on Tumblr? Let us know what you think of the new dashboard design, and don't forget to follow our tumbles through the time-space continuum.

The Hawkeye Initiative, Exposing Sexism in Comic Female Characters

The Hawkeye Initiative, a Tumblr that exploded overnight, might not be totally safe for work, but we blame that on the absurd character drawings of females in comic books past and present.

The Hawkeye Initiative, a Tumblr that exploded overnight, might not be totally safe for work, but we blame that on the absurd character drawings of females in comic books past and present.

The blog was based on a pithy, but impactful, suggestion by Tumblr user Gingerhaze that replacing female characters with The Avengers' Hawkeye would help expose the sexualization of women in comics and graphic novels.

And so, The Hawkeye Initiative was born to reveal how strong females in superhero comics are almost always depicted with both their backside and bosom on full display. The result is a funny visualization with a serious message. Hawkeye bends over backward, seductively swashbuckles, and overflexes his spine (you know, typical Wonder Woman stuff) like never before.

Girls in geekdom is a hot-button topic these days, and it extends beyond depictions in comic books. The Fake Geek Girl and Idiot Nerd Girl meme has brought up issues of misogyny and exclusion that have long plagued geek culture. Advocates for a more inclusionary culture include sci-fi writer John Scalzi, who wrote that whoever wants to be a geek, can be, and John Siracusa and Dan Benjamin, hosts of the influential tech podcast Hypercritical, who explained last week (discussion starts at 56:08) why women are shut out and why it should stop.

We know of another Tumblr that supports female geeks and techies — our own: heygeeksugar.tumblr.com. Follow our Tumblr, and tell us your stories of the trials, tribulations, and glory of what it's like to be a lady geek.

Gifts For Funny Friends: Internet Sensations Turned Into Books

Blogs to books, Tumblrs to tomes, posts to page-turners: it seems like as soon as a Twitter account, blog, Tumblr site, or YouTube video goes viral, a book deal soon follows.

Blogs to books, Tumblrs to tomes, posts to page-turners: it seems like as soon as a Twitter account, blog, Tumblr site, or YouTube video goes viral, a book deal soon follows. The latest site to get a book deal is He Texted, the brainchild of Lisa Winning and Carrie Henderson Mcdermott. Launched in October, the blog is a forum for women to post ambiguous texts from guys and get feedback in the form of comments or poll options — "he's into you," "he's not into you," or the "verdict is still out."

Recently, the guys behind the too-funny (and sometimes too-true) Sh*t Girls Say released a book version of their Twitter and videos poking fun at what women say, and the Suri's Burn Book Tumblr hit bookshelves in September. For some, it may seem pointless to pay money for a book replicating something you can enjoy for free online. But many of these coffee-table books and memoirs inspired by Internet sensations include fresh content and/or they are packaged in an artistic way. If you're looking for gift ideas this holiday season for the funny ladies in your life, check out these hard-copy editions of some of our favorite female-inspired Internet hits!

Tumblr of the Day: 9-Eyes, Unexpected Scenes From Google Street View

The Google Street View camera looks like a high-tech disco ball, with nine lenses aimed in every direction to capture all the world has to offer — including ATV street races, escaping inmates, and snow monkeys in hot springs.

The Google Street View camera looks like a high-tech disco ball, with nine lenses aimed in every direction to capture all the world has to offer — including ATV street races, escaping inmates, and snow monkeys in hot springs. Canadian artist Jon Rafman clicks his way through Google Street View, collecting the strangest, funniest, and most unexpected scenes on his Tumblr blog, 9-eyes.com.

It's a fascinating cross section of humanity and an interesting perspective on photography in the 21st century. Is the photographer the robot that automated the shutter click, or is it the human who gathered and curated those images into a collection?

The Street View vehicle fleet has logged over five million miles of open road around the world, not to mention a large chunk of the Amazon River and underwater panoramas of six of the ocean's living coral reefs. There are many more compelling images yet to be discovered, and we'll just have to stay tuned as Google adds even more miles to its Street View collection.

This week, Tumblr unveiled Photoset (free), an iOS app that creates and shares high-resolution photosets — no Tumblr account required. In fact, you don't need to sign up for any new account to use Photoset.

In our test, we started taking photos right in the app, rearranged the images, slapped on a quick caption, and uploaded it to the Internet, just like that. Photoset creates a unique URL for a photo collage to share through email, Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr. The photos adjust as you resize your window (making it optimized for mobile devices), and clicking on individual photos prompts a Tumblr-style gallery to appear.

Read on for more ways to use Photoset.
