Tim Cook Nixes Apple Glasses, but Says Wrist Tech Is "Interesting"

A conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off All Things D's tech executive conference, D11, this week.

A conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off All Things D's tech executive conference, D11, this week. While the talk between Tim and journalists Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher varied from Apple's current tax woes to stock prices to the competitive Android market, it was the discussion on a much buzzed about technology concept that peaked our curiosity: wearable devices.

Showing off his Nike+ Fuelband, the Apple head said that beyond fitness devices that have their one specific purpose, he hasn't seen groundbreaking wearable gadgets. "There's nothing that's going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch or whatever to wear one . . . It's an area, where it's ripe for exploration. It's ripe for us getting excited about."

While he won't say if it's an area Apple is specifically exploring, Tim did say the wrist is likely to be more successful of a place to make wearable tech for than glasses on the face. "From a mainstream point of view, this [glasses] is difficult. For something to work here [on the wrist], you first have to convince people it's so incredible that they want to wear it."

If an Apple take on Google Glass is unlikely to happen, would you be interested in any wrist gadgets the company could one day create?

Biggest Apple News 2012

In the words of Katy Perry, Apple's year was hot and cold, yes and no, in and out, up and down. Although Apple was named the most valuable company in history in terms of market capitalization, the California-based organization had its share of press blunders, too, from a series of articles criticizing its offshore manufacturing to a mobile navigation app that failed to, well, navigate.

In the iDevice arena, the highly anticipated iPhone 5 and iPad Mini unveilings were the year's blockbuster events, but upgrades to the MacBook Pro and desktop iMac were certainly notable as well. Relive the year in the world of Mac with this look back at Apple's biggest news items in 2012.

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.
