Syfy's Special Effects Makeup Show Premieres Tonight

Tonight Syfy is premiering a new reality show called Face Off, wherein professional FX makeup artists compete in increasingly challenging makeup design competitions. Special effects makeup is a fascinating field, and you can learn a lot about bone structure, color theory, and makeup in general by watching how these people work.

I'm clearly pretty excited for the show, especially since I'm always on the lookout for over-involved Halloween makeup ideas (if it doesn't take at least an hour and involve a pound of cream base, I'm not interested). Are you jazzed too, though? To check out a time-lapse video of some cool FX transformations, just keep reading.

Things You Can't Watch on Google TV

Ah, the joys of Google TV.

Ah, the joys of Google TV. The magic set-top box can bring the Internet to your TV, and also allow you to browse available shows and clips from around the Internet in one clean interface . . . well, that's what it was supposed to do, anyway.

It seems that not all is going well for Google's new TV system, as major cable networks are lining up to block Google TV's access to their sites. ABC, CBS, NBC, SyFy, Hulu, and now FanCast are all blocked for Google TV users, which means the simple interface that searches web, video, and cable content will come up with fewer search results. Want to watch The Office? You're out of luck if you want to use your Google TV to do so from NBC's site or Hulu. But there is a way to avoid this problem altogether. Find out how, after the break.

Do You Stay Loyal to Sci Fi TV Through a Mid-Season Break?

Things are not looking too good for sci fi on the prime-time front: Lost is in its last season, and three shows — Fringe, FlashForward, and V — are suffering from low ratings.

Things are not looking too good for sci fi on the prime-time front: Lost is in its last season, and three shows — Fringe, FlashForward, and V — are suffering from low ratings. Being a fan of these shows, I am pretty bummed, especially since each one of them (with the exception of Lost) was subjected to the doomed mid-season break and returned to at least 15 percent — if not 50 percent — less viewership. Everyone loves a cliffhanger but not when it's a relatively new show, and especially not after airing only four to eight episodes of it. Add to that the intricate plot lines that often make up sci fi shows, and people can't be bothered to remember what was going on — especially after a four month hiatus! Many still blame a mid-season break for diminishing the splendor that was once Heroes. Talk about a momentum killer.

The good news: Fox believes in Fringe enough to renew it for a third season. The bad: things are looking pretty grim for FlashForward and V. The wait and see: Caprica just had its mid-season finale, so now we play the waiting game to see what Syfy will do with it once it returns in October! I am definitely keeping my fingers crossed for a little sci fi prime-time fix — how about you?

Is Caprica City Really Seattle?

The new Syfy series Caprica is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows on TV.

The new Syfy series Caprica is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows on TV. Not only is it well written, but it gives you that warm familiarity of Battlestar Galactica without stepping all over its toes. If you know your Battlestar history, you'd know that the series starts off on the planet Caprica, then travels many light years away to eventually find the Earth we know today. So why are there so many striking similarities between Caprica City and modern-day Seattle? Could it be that Caprica City is actually Seattle in an alternate reality? I have a few examples of this reasoning, the most obvious is the iconic Pike's Place Public Market sign we keep seeing during the show's cut scenes. Where else in the galaxy would you find that!?

I've done some digging and came up with five more reasons why I think that Caprica City is based on the Northwestern town . . . or actually is Seattle somewhere in time. Find out more after the break.
