Geek Tip: Picasa Rolls Out New Features

Google has just announced some new additions to Picasa web albums, which will give us more freedom to play around with our pictures. The first feature is called "Map My Photos" and lets you tag photos so that you can show people the exact location where you took your picture. Once you choose to share your album, all your tagged images will show up on a Google map just like the one shown here - a great way to show friends and family where you've been on trips etc! The second feature is called "Picasa for your mobile" and will let you flip through your latest photo albums from Picasa on your cell phone. Just click on "My favorites" and your images will automatically re-size to fit your mobile's screen!

It's about time! Google has finally decided to jack up the free version of Picasa's Web Album storage size from the orginal 250MB to 1GB. Just like Gmail, which says the storage amount 'and counting', Picasa's size will also slowly increase. With 1GB of storage, you'll now be able to store up to 4000 high-quality photos.

Picasa has also become more like Flickr whereby you can search the public photos posted by other people. Just be sure to change your picture folders to public if you wish to do so!

Last week, I helped you pick out a new digital camera, and showed you how to download your photos to your computer, but which program should you use to manage and share them online? Flickr is still my go-to site for archiving pictures because it allows you to put your pictures on the web and view your friends' archives. Because of the site's added tagging feature, it's easy to categorize your photos and explore photos by photographer, tag, time, text and place.

If you have a lot of photos and exceed the Flickr free account 10MB monthly size cap, using Flickr's web based image upload tool or their Windows application to upload your images can become very tedious. For example, I have a really great camera which takes gorgeous, high quality images around 2MB in size. This means I would only be able to upload 5 high quality images per month. Since I like to get my pictures on the net for my friends and family to view, I resize and save them with Photoshop before uploading.
