Sony Japan made two major announcements today — one for a new PS Vita console and another for a PS Vita TV streaming device — that left us counting down the days until gift-giving season. The event was televised from Tokyo and streamed onto the Sony US site, which can only mean that the new portable gaming console and TV entertainment system are heading across the Pacific soon.
The new PS Vita (model number PCH-200) is a 20 percent thinner, 15 percent lighter version of PlayStation's previous handheld gaming model. It launches Oct. 10 in Japan, will retail at about $190, and comes in six bright color variations.
The PS Vita TV is something to be excited about. Sony takes on Apple TV with its new streaming platform that connects the PS Vita as well as the upcoming PlayStation 4 to a TV display. Sony Entertainment's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services will be available for viewing through PS Vita TV, which also has built-in Hulu and Twitter apps.
