Twitter #Music Is Now Playing on an iPhone Near You

Twitter is bringing music to its users' ears with its #Music app for iOS (free) and music.twitter.com on the web.

Twitter is bringing music to its users' ears with its #Music app for iOS (free) and music.twitter.com on the web. Twitter wants to be more than a source for breaking news, One Direction e-feuds, and what your friends are eating for lunch. The new app is positioning Twitter as the new Billboard Hot 100 of the Internet.

While Billboard's Hot 100 measures radio play and sales, Twitter #Music uses tweets, RT's, and mentions to gauge what music is popular or emerging. Since an artist's success relies less on album sales and more on social media popularity these days, Twitter's new feature is certainly a music app made for modern times.

Will Twitter #Music revitalize a stagnant industry? Find out how the latest music app will help you discover new sounds and tweet about what you find, then let us know if you like what you hear.

For Your Spotif-Eyes Only: Privatize Listening Activity

There's no way around it: you don't want the world to know that you're listening to Flo Rida for the eighth time this afternoon.

There's no way around it: you don't want the world to know that you're listening to Flo Rida for the eighth time this afternoon. For better or worse, Spotify has certainly caught on with the Facebook crowd, and the company will only continue to grow thanks to its new foray into the web. With Spotify's audience increasing as fast as it is, we put together a little guide to keeping your Flo Rida obsession for your Spotif-eyes only.

Spotify, believe it or not, has settings to privatize listening activity posts, but the social media controls are kept in the nooks and crannies of the desktop app and on Facebook. In what follows, we've laid out several ways Spoti-philes can keep their tunes to themselves and double (or triple) check that they've done it right.

TuneIn: A Powerful Radio App for Avid Listeners

When we say Internet radio, the first thing that comes to mind is probably Pandora, or maybe even 8tracks.

When we say Internet radio, the first thing that comes to mind is probably Pandora, or maybe even 8tracks. But today, we're talking about radio — real radio, with stations run by live DJs and broadcasted using crazy tall towers and antennas, that just . . . happens to be on the Internet. TuneIn (free) gives listeners access to all that publicly available audio goodness via iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, and most recently, Windows 8 devices.

TuneIn isn't your grandmother's dial-in radio — the app has a search function that finds stations playing the song, artist, or sports game of your choice right then and there. With over 70,000 stations and two million on-demand programs, nearly every music, sports, and news program from around the world is listed on the app. Add stations, songs, and shows to Favorites for quick access to your most loved programming. Then set an alarm to wake up to those stations, or a timer to fall asleep to your favorite stream.

For hardcore listeners, TuneIn Radio Pro ($1) is well worth the upgrade. The paid version of the app works like a DVR for radio. Record any station as you listen or set timed recordings for your favorite programs.

Let us know what you think about TuneIn Radio and, as always, happy listening.

MOG: A Music Service That'll Surprise You

We're looking at the different dimensions of digital music: streaming (Spotify and Rdio), Internet radio (Pandora and 8tracks), downloading, and some mix of all the above (Xbox Music).

We're looking at the different dimensions of digital music: streaming (Spotify and Rdio), Internet radio (Pandora and 8tracks), downloading, and some mix of all the above (Xbox Music). Today, the music service under the microscope is MOG, a high-quality streaming site founded in 2005.

MOG stands for "music on the go," and it truly is, supporting more platforms than any other service we've seen. What we found is that MOG, recently acquired by Beats Electronics, is built for audiophiles, offering the highest sound quality available for streaming music online.

Music from MOG will sound as great from a web browser as it will from a home entertainment system, which is exactly what it was intended for. Even though MOG doesn't have the largest music library on the web, you might be surprised by how much the music streaming service can do. Learn more about the price, the music, and what sets MOG apart.

8tracks: A Different Kind of Internet Radio

Since online music services are popping up left and right these days, there may be an industry veteran you've overlooked: 8tracks, an internet radio platform that streams playlists based on mood, genre, or both.

Since online music services are popping up left and right these days, there may be an industry veteran you've overlooked: 8tracks, an internet radio platform that streams playlists based on mood, genre, or both. The company, founded in 2006, unveiled a brand-new iOS app (free) this week with a completely new user interface and, for a limited time, no ads.

The app works beautifully, with full-screen album artwork and a bold new look. Playlists can be accessed through mobile devices or the web and are curated by real people, not algorithms. 8tracks takes the original mode of music discovery — personal, handcrafted mix tapes — into the digital age. Users create an online playlist with eight or more tracks (hence the name), and add tags so that listeners can search by different moods like "Summer," "chill," "party," or "working out."

And with 8tracks' freshly remodeled mobile app, listeners can stream "electro chill" mix tapes on the go to discover a wider range of music than any cassette could have ever handled.
