He's a Droid; I'm an iPhone: Camera, Part Two

After the first round of camera head-to-head, I couldn't decide if I preferred my iPhone or his Droid, although the Droid's camera is technically superior.

After the first round of camera head-to-head, I couldn't decide if I preferred my iPhone or his Droid, although the Droid's camera is technically superior. We decided to put our respective cameras to the test for a second round of battle royale during a dinner out. Side note: I know I said previously that phones at the table is a no-no, but this was in the name of research!

One feature of the Droid we didn't test out in our first camera head-to-head is its flash, which is noticeably absent from the iPhone. I figured this would come in handy during dinner; the restaurant is fairly well-lit but since I'm a huge fan of taking photos of my food, I can appreciate some extra lighting, though I was skeptical of how well the Droid's flash would light our dinner. Here are three photos of our dinner (pork, with barley and greens in case you wanted to know): a Droid photo, an iPhone photo, and a Droid-with-flash photo.

Earlier this week, we got the ball rolling on our fun best of polls when I asked you: What is your favorite social networking site of 2009? Well now I'm turning the attention to another popular topic of '09 — cell phones! Last year seemed to be all about the iPhone 3G, but this year, we not only got our hands on a new iPhone 3GS, but some pretty fancy BlackBerrys, Android handsets, and impressive smartphones from Palm. There was certainly a lot of pretty new smartphones to choose from, but which one did you like the best?

George Lucas Owns the Droid: the Name, Not the Phone

What do George Lucas and the new Droid have in common?

What do George Lucas and the new Droid have in common? More than you'd think! I'm stoked to get my hands on the new device being offered up by Motorola to see if it really can top my iPhone, but when I got an invite to the San Francisco launch party I noticed something interesting at the bottom: the word "droid" is licensed to Lucasfilm LTD, which means Motorola pays a fee to the Star Wars icon to use his trademarked term.

I got the facts confirmed by a friend that works at the Lucas compound, but also found some other interesting tidbits about the name. The same device is being called the Milestone in Italy and Germany, but comes with more advanced multitouch support. Ah, the things you learn!
