The Galaxy S4 Mini and a History of Tiny Tech

Samsung introduced a smaller version of its futuristic Galaxy S4, aptly named the Galaxy S4 mini.

Samsung introduced a smaller version of its futuristic Galaxy S4, aptly named the Galaxy S4 mini. The little Android-powered smartphone has been downsized from five inches to 4.3 inches, weighs 107 g, and can truly be operated with just one hand. It's not quite as powerful as its slightly larger counterpart, but still packs a punch with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, an 8MP rear camera, and a 1.9MP front-facing camera.

Samsung isn't the only company that's released tiny tech to appeal to a bigger audience. As tech gets thinner, lighter, better — or at least marketing gets better labeling products "mini" — we decided to take a tour of the miniaturization of gadgets in recent years. From cars to projectors to even vacuums, take a look at what's gotten the pint-sized makeover.

Apple kicked off what many speculated to be the iPad Mini announcement with an update to its many computing lines: the MacBook Pro, the Mac Mini, and the desktop iMac.

The most popular size of the MacBook Pro, the 13-inch display is now available with Retina display, starting at $1,699. The new MacBook Pro is 3.57 lbs, making it the lightest MacBook ever, and 20 percent thinner than previous generations.

The Mac Mini received its first update since mid-2011, and the 2.5Ghz dual-core i5 processor with 4 GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive starts at $599. A server version of the Mac Mini, with a 2.3Ghz quad-core i7 processor and two 1TB drives, is available for $999.

The iMac is now available in a super-slim casing, thanks to the removal of its optical drive, and will begin shipping in November. The new eighth generation iMac comes in two sizes — 21.5-inch for $1,299 and a 27-inch for $1,799 available in December — and features a new Apple Fusion Drive, which combines a 128GB flash drive and a 1TB or 3TB hard drive in one system.
