iDialUDrive App Helps You Stay Handsfree

With California's Hands Free Law in full effect, I'm always looking for creative ways to help me stay handsfree so I can keep my eyes on the road.

With California's Hands Free Law in full effect, I'm always looking for creative ways to help me stay handsfree so I can keep my eyes on the road. Even those two or three seconds you spend navigating your way to your contacts list to dial a number are a few seconds too long to spend looking down.

Well a new handy app called iDialUDrive works as a simple way to automatically dial your contacts — without using your hands! With iDialUDrive you can create custom lists of the people you want to call, then by pressing one control, this App will call the first entry in your call list. After the call is finito, it will hang up for you and continue down the list automatically so you don't have to lift a finger!

iDialUDrive costs 99 cents from the Apple App Store in iTunes.

What's Worse: Texting or Using a Cell Phone While Driving?

In California, we're all very aware of the newish Hands Free Law prohibiting driving while talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device, but did you know that texting isn't specifically forbidden by the law?

In California, we're all very aware of the newish Hands Free Law prohibiting driving while talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device, but did you know that texting isn't specifically forbidden by the law? That's surprising to me, especially in light of the report of an American teen that died in a car accident this week while she was driving and texting at the same time.

For the same primary reason that cell phone calls in cars aren't allowed - holding the phone inhibits your ability to use both hands - it seems that texting fits the same danger zone. Actually, since you have your eyes and hands on your phone to text, I think it's way worse to text while driving. And of course, they're both intellectual distractions, because your brain isn't fully focused on the road.

What do you guys think?

Getting Busted For Driving While Talking Isn't So Bad After All

If you've already received a ticket for cruising around in California with one hand on the wheel and one hand holding your phone, I have a little something to make getting that ticket seem less depressing.

If you've already received a ticket for cruising around in California with one hand on the wheel and one hand holding your phone, I have a little something to make getting that ticket seem less depressing. Aliph, the maker of the uber-stylish Jawbone headsets (a personal fave and one of my June Must Haves), is offering you a discount when you buy one of their cool headsets!

Just enter in your citation number on the Aliph website to receive a nice $20 discount — that's the amount of the ticket itself! Well, on your first offense anyway. Here's hoping that you won't get caught "cell-handed" again!

David Beckham: An Early Adopter to the Hands-Free Law

California's hands-free wireless telephone law may have taken effect July 1, but celebs like Seal and David Beckham were already ready for the big day since they are both avid bluetooth headset users.

California's hands-free wireless telephone law may have taken effect July 1, but celebs like Seal and David Beckham were already ready for the big day since they are both avid bluetooth headset users. "Whenever I’m driving around L.A. or heading to practice, I use my Motorola H12 to keep me connected to my mobile phone," says Beckham.

Not only is David loving his Motopure H12 Bluetooth headset that comes with CrystalTalk - special noise cancellation technology for superior audio clarity - but he is also a fan of another Motorola product, the RAZR 2 — we could seriously start calling him the McSteamy of tech!

What Hands-Free Accessory Do You Have For Driving?

Starting today, putting that cell phone to your ear while you're on the road will earn you a ticket if you're in California.

Starting today, putting that cell phone to your ear while you're on the road will earn you a ticket if you're in California. Our state is joining NYC in making it illegal to talk on a cell phone unless you're using a hands-free device while driving. Savvy geeks like us may already own devices (I have an earpiece even though I'm not a driver), but some people will surely be popping into the store to grab a new accessory.

Whether you're planning on buying something or already have a device, what's your hands-free gadget of choice? Are you an earpiece sporter, do you have a Bluetooth speaker, or will you choose to use a corded earpiece (ala the iPhone's earbuds)?

Ask a Geek Girl: Bluetooth Speakerphone Conundrum

I got an email from a friend the other day wondering about which Bluetooth speakerphone she should get to be compliant with the upcoming California Hands-Free law that goes into effect tomorrow!

I got an email from a friend the other day wondering about which Bluetooth speakerphone she should get to be compliant with the upcoming California Hands-Free law that goes into effect tomorrow! She writes:

Do you know which visor Bluetooth device I can get for my LGEnv2 and my husband's LGvx5400? We have Verizon and they don't have anything at the stores yet that I can pick up. I have to be able to do voice dialing and hear the other person clearly. Oh, and hubby's gonna be spittin' mad if it's complicated!

Since I didn't want anyone spitting on anything, I got right on the task! To find out which device I would recommend, just read more

Spiderman Car Cell Phone Holder: Love It or Leave It?

If you're one of the good people in California, like Seal, who has sworn off using their cell phone while driving because of the new law, then maybe you will appreciate this car cell phone holder.

If you're one of the good people in California, like Seal, who has sworn off using their cell phone while driving because of the new law, then maybe you will appreciate this car cell phone holder. Oh, and you love Spiderman? You're all set.

Whether you hit up a Bluetooth device or a headset, it would be great to have something like this to hold your phone secure while you cruise and gab. But, I'm not four years old, alas, so I have to leave this product (but love the idea). What do you think?

Seal Gets Prepped For California's Hands-Free Cellphone Law

On July 1, California's new state law that requires drivers to use hands-free technology like headsets and bluetooth-enabled devices will take full effect.

On July 1, California's new state law that requires drivers to use hands-free technology like headsets and bluetooth-enabled devices will take full effect. The Policy Institute of California is predicting that this new law will save around 300 lives a year (a 7 percent decline in fatal car accidents), considering the drop other states have noticed since enforcing the law.

The penalty if you get caught talking with your phone to your ear? It's only $20 for first-time offenders and you won't lose points against your driving record. Regardless, the cops issuing tickets are going to be swamped for the first six months till people finally realize they're going to need a hands-free device. I suggest going geek chic with the Jawbone Headset. Hey, at least Seal is playing it safe while maintaining his techno-chic flair with his shiny Bentley, shiny shades, and shiny Bluetooth earpiece!
