We dove into the Grooveshark tank to figure out where the online streaming service fits in today's realm of digital music, and to try out its new interface, which launched last month. It's been reported that Grooveshark operates in a bit of a gray area, having been kicked out of Apple and Android's app stores because of pirating claims from recording industry execs.

This eyebrow-raising fact piqued our interest and we decided to investigate. Although the sound quality isn't fantastic and the music library is far from perfect, Grooveshark was really good (almost freakishly so) at finding music that matched our preferences, and — best of all — it's practically free for all users on web and mobile. In what follows, we've rounded up some other reasons why you might want to get into Grooveshark.

Download of the Day: Grooveshark For Android

I love, love, love using Grooveshark to play music on my laptop during the day and am waiting for the day it's available as an iPhone app.

I love, love, love using Grooveshark to play music on my laptop during the day and am waiting for the day it's available as an iPhone app. Grooveshark gives you access to a vast music library, allows you to create and save playlists, and even lets you upload your own songs to toss in the mix. And now, it's beginning to launch an Android app.

The app, which is currently available in "sneak peek" form for VIP subscribers of the service, helps you find, organize, and control music on your device. Search for songs you want to hear to add to your playlists, mix streaming songs with songs you already have, play songs immediately or queue them for later, even cache songs to play when you're offline. You can also use the app to create custom radio stations, similar to Pandora.

If you want to test out the service on your Android phone, you'll have to pay for it. To see how much, keep reading.

Websites of the Day: Grooveshark and Grooveshark Lite

Although Pandora is one of my favorite online radio players, I just discovered Grooveshark and Grooveshark Lite, and am completely hooked.

Although Pandora is one of my favorite online radio players, I just discovered Grooveshark and Grooveshark Lite, and am completely hooked. And therefore, I thought it would be worthy enough to give you a double dose of Website of the Day action. With Grooveshark, you can upload your music for easy access anywhere that there's an Internet connection. Plus you can share, rate, and review music all over the web from your Grooveshark profile page. Think MySpace, but just for your music library, that's totally fun to use.

And Grooveshark Lite? Well, it allows you to browse through millions of songs worldwide, make your own custom playlists, and get this — listen to them in their entirety without interruption. GSLite can even create playlists for you, which is a great way to discover new music. Just imagine browsing the world's iTunes libraries, and you'll get the idea. I'm so in love, I can hardly stand it.
