Download of the Day: Read It Later

My devotion to Google Reader has been well-documented here, and I relish any new opportunity to get more of it (though I'd have to be a superhuman to read everything in my reader daily).

My devotion to Google Reader has been well-documented here, and I relish any new opportunity to get more of it (though I'd have to be a superhuman to read everything in my reader daily).

Read It Later is a free Firefox extension that just adds little empty check marks to stories in your feeds, and when you come to a post you want to read but don't have time to, simply click the check marks.

All checked stories are then saved in a separate reading list — either from Read It Later's site, in your RSS Reader, or for reading offline later!

Geek Tip: Export Your Feeds From One RSS Reader to Another

Change can be hard.

Change can be hard. Maybe, for instance, you committed to an RSS Reader early on and then decided to switch to a different RSS Reader later on. I'm not here to judge — just to guide.

If you happen to be dying to make the switch to Google Reader from another RSS (maybe you heard how fan-freaking-tastic Better GReader makes it), then I bet you're also saying, "yes, I would love to switch, but what about all my feeds?!" That's a valid complaint, especially if you have upwards of 100 feeds, as so many of you do.

Geek Tip: Drag and Drop in Google Reader

Sometimes the best geek tips aren't something huge and revolutionary — sometimes they're "duh" things that you either forget you can do, or they're so simple you feel like you should have known but just never learned for some reason.

Sometimes the best geek tips aren't something huge and revolutionary — sometimes they're "duh" things that you either forget you can do, or they're so simple you feel like you should have known but just never learned for some reason.

My "duh" geek tip is being able to use drag and drop in Google Reader to organize your feeds. I've been using the "Manage My Subscription" button ever since I've been a Reader user, and manually going to arrange and organize my feeds. I just found that you can simply drag the feed name in the right margin and drop them into new folders, and out of alphabetical order (which is the default) into whichever order you want.

Do you have any "duh" geek tips?

Download of the Day: Better GReader

As a geek, it's kind of embarrassing to admit that I was ever resistant to using an RSS reader, based on the fact that I liked the way many of my blogs look in their original forms.

As a geek, it's kind of embarrassing to admit that I was ever resistant to using an RSS reader, based on the fact that I liked the way many of my blogs look in their original forms. So many sites put a lot of thought into their design, but I slowly came around to putting some of the blogs I read into Google Reader. Of course, I slowly became dependent on it and finally added all my blogs I love, even if I had to miss the pretty site design I delight in seeing when I open up their pages.

So I rejoiced when I found that Lifehacker had created Better GReader for use with Google Reader. A Firefox add-on, it features an addition of keyboard shortcuts, skipping of Google Reader's default subscriber, and — my absolute favorite thing — when you click a post's title, instead of opening up a new tab, the item is displayed in Reader just the way it normally appears! Hey, I'm easy to please.

Geek Tip: Add Google Reader to Your iGoogle Page

If you've got a ton of feeds in your Google reader and you can never find the time to read, you may want to install a nifty widget that allows you to view your Google Reader items on your iGoogle page!

If you've got a ton of feeds in your Google reader and you can never find the time to read, you may want to install a nifty widget that allows you to view your Google Reader items on your iGoogle page! Read any RSS or Atom feed right from iGoogle, having the option to keep stories new or mark as read.

Unfortunately I don't think this new widget works with Bloglines, although I'll keep you in the loop if I find something that does!

Geek Tip: Use Your Google Reader Offline

If you use Google Reader and have already downloaded Google Gears, you'll be happy to know that you can now get all your RSS feeds offline.

If you use Google Reader and have already downloaded Google Gears, you'll be happy to know that you can now get all your RSS feeds offline. To do this, just click the "offline" link in the top of the Google Reader.

Google Blog announced that this is the first Google web application made for online and offline viewing. Now you can stay tuned on all of geeksugar's latest news while you are jet setting across the globe or trekking cross-country via train.

RSS feed obsessed? Check out a great download called iFeedPod.

If you just so happen to use Google Reader for all your RSS news and you own a Wii, you can now use both simultaneously, thanks to a new fully supported feature from Google.
