Honoring Dr. King: Google Doodles Through the Years

Every third Monday in January, the nation celebrates civil rights icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — including Google! The web giant has honored the activist every year since 2006 (and once in 2003) with an annual Google Doodle homepage tribute. Today's doodle features Dr. King in a geometric pattern of cool purple, blue, and yellow hues.

Coincidentally (or not), this year's MLK Day is also the day that the first African American president of the United States publicly takes the oath of office for the second time. How far we have come since Martin Luther King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.

There are more milestones ahead, as Dr. King's famed "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Honor one of the nation's most iconic activists by taking a look at Martin Luther King-inspired Google Doodles through the years.

Happy Birthday, Google! 14 of the Best Google Doodles

Fourteen years ago today Google was born in a legendary Palo Alto garage.

Fourteen years ago today Google was born in a legendary Palo Alto garage. In honor of tech-iversary, we've compiled 14 our favorite Google doodles.

A way of celebrating the birthdays of pop culture legends and national milestones, the Google Doodle is a nod to the playful side of the company with a day-long redesign of its corporate logo on the site's homepage. The Google Doodle concept started while the search giant was still in its infancy when founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin added a stick figure to the logo as a way of saying they were out of the office attending Burning Man in the Nevada desert. Over 1,000 doodles have appeared on Google homepages in the US and abroad in the years since.

A team of Google designers work on the doodles, but they are open to receiving suggestions and doodles themselves from the public.

Halloween

It's the Great Halloween Doodle, Google

The Google homepage doodles are known for their whimsical celebration of holidays, but past creations can't hold a candle to the jack-o'-lantern heavyweights featured in today's Halloween Google Doodle.

The Google homepage doodles are known for their whimsical celebration of holidays, but past creations can't hold a candle to the jack-o'-lantern heavyweights featured in today's Halloween Google Doodle.

Six giant pumpkins, the biggest weighing in at 1,298 pounds, were brought to the Google campus ready for a team of doodlers to start their G-O-O-G-L-E carvings. With the seeds emptied out of each pumpkin, people were easily able to fit their heads within the cavernous walls. In fact, some of the pumpkins' exteriors measured six inches deep, requiring a saw to carve through the thickest parts. See how these great pumpkins were carved in the full behind-the-scenes video:

Google's Ice Cream Sundae Doodle: Love It or Leave It?

Yesterday's Google Doodle, created in honor of the 119th birthday of the ice cream sundae, caused a bit of a stir on the Internet.

Yesterday's Google Doodle, created in honor of the 119th birthday of the ice cream sundae, caused a bit of a stir on the Internet.

Many thought that the birthday of the sundae didn't seem high profile enough to warrant a Doodle. Others speculated that the design was more of a nod toward the next version of the Android OS, codenamed ice cream. Love it or hate it, it joins a long list of past Doodles — what do you think?

Google Brings Doodles to Your Phone

Google seems to outdo itself every time there's a new Doodle on its homepage, and now mobile users will get a taste of the action as well. Google has released mobile Doodles on special occasions in the past (Summer Olympics, anyone?), but now the custom art will be available for Android and iPhone users on the go on a more regular basis or anytime you see a new version on Google's web homepage.

Just visit m.google.com to see it for yourself, however, Google doesn't say if they'll be as interactive as the regular web versions. I'd love to play Google Pac-Man on the bus. Just sayin'.

Google Celebrates Your Birthday With a Doodle

Google may go out of its way to honor significant moments in time with interactive and/or animated Doodles, but now the company is celebrating your big day with a Doodle meant just for you.

Google may go out of its way to honor significant moments in time with interactive and/or animated Doodles, but now the company is celebrating your big day with a Doodle meant just for you. Announced on Google's blog over the weekend, if you upload your birthday into your Google Profile, you'll get a birthday surprise in the form of a custom Doodle. Clicking on it adds another layer of fun, but unfortunately I can't tell you what that is exactly since my birthday isn't for another few months. Plus, I don't want to spoil the fun.

Google Gets Animated For John Lennon's 70th

It would be nearly impossible to beat the awesomeness that was the interactive Pac-Man doodle that Google posted on its main search page back in May, but today's video doodle may come close.

It would be nearly impossible to beat the awesomeness that was the interactive Pac-Man doodle that Google posted on its main search page back in May, but today's video doodle may come close.

In honor of John Lennon's 70th birthday tomorrow, Google has created an animated video doodle set to the tune of "Imagine" on its homepage. It's a quick vid, and once it's finished playing it takes you to the John Lennon Google search page so you can catch up on your Lennon history. Check out the animation for yourself after the break.

Google Transforms Logo Into Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man Game

The game you know and love as Pac-Man is celebrating its 30th anniversary tomorrow, and in honor, Google has transformed its logo into an interactive, 256-level Pac-Man game.

The game you know and love as Pac-Man is celebrating its 30th anniversary tomorrow, and in honor, Google has transformed its logo into an interactive, 256-level Pac-Man game. It's a serious time waster in itself, but if you have a friend who wants to play along, just click the "Insert Coin" button next to the Google Search box, and Ms. Pac-Man will pop on the scene so you both can get into some multiplayer action. Just use the WASD keys to play along. Perfect timing, Google — I needed a Friday morning pick-me-up (and I don't even need any quarters). This year's Google Doodle will be active for 48 hours — game on!
