I've been using Gmail for years, and against my advice, most of my family hesitated to ditch their stale ISP-issued email accounts for correspondance (ie: Comcast.net). Thank goodness most of them have finally seen the light and migrated over. Are you (or someone you know) a newly coined Gmail convert? Then share this post with them, or bookmark for later reference!

Two New Ways to Find Unread Gmail Messages

Since I generally keep my Gmail window open for much of the day, checking for new messages is like muscle memory.

Since I generally keep my Gmail window open for much of the day, checking for new messages is like muscle memory. The downside: sometimes I do it way too often. Two new just-released tools from Google provide fast and easy access to new and unread messages.

If you, like me, tend to leave at ton of browser tabs open, you'll love the latest Gmail Labs release. The new unread message icon is a tiny number that displays directly over the Gmail icon in your browser tab displaying the number of unread messages in your inbox. It's not unlike the number in parentheses that typically displays on the browser tab, but that number can sometimes get hidden if you have many open tabs. To turn it on, go to the Labs tab in settings, enable it, and click save. This lab is only available in Chrome and Firefox.

Check out the second notification feature (that works for Gchat, too!) after the break.

Easy Gmail Tips and Tricks

Gmail is one of the most popular email clients out there — I'm not sure I know anyone who doesn't have one. And since its initial release in 2004, Google has added a ton of helpful features. Here are five of my favorite tips for making Gmail work better and faster than ever.

New Gmail Lab Allows You to Search For Attachments

Gmail has always offered a steady stream of new features and helpful tips aimed at streamlining your digital life.

Gmail has always offered a steady stream of new features and helpful tips aimed at streamlining your digital life. Recent helpful additions have focused on attachments, and now a new Gmail Labs feature allows users to search for attachments and files using a tool called Apps Search.

The new tool, which users must enable in Gmail Labs to work (go to Settings > Labs > enable Apps Search), changes the "Search Mail" function in your Gmail account to "Search Mail and Docs." When you use the search function within your email, search results will include both email (like you're used to now) and document results, including attachments and Google Docs files. For now, email results show up first and faster than attachments, so if you choose to enable this lab, it won't slow down your search results.

Inbox Preview Lab in Gmail Shows Sneak Peek of Emails

I don't know what was happening yesterday, but my WiFi connection was insanely slow.

I don't know what was happening yesterday, but my WiFi connection was insanely slow. Naturally, it had to happen when I was awaiting an important email, and my Gmail was taking so long to load.

Once again, Gmail to the rescue! You can now enable an Inbox Preview lab that will show you the first 10 emails in your inbox, before your entire Gmail account appears. This way, if you have a bad Internet connection like me, you'll be able to see if you have any new emails — without having to wait half an hour for the page to completely load.

Gmail Launches Message Translation Lab

I can't say I get a ton of email in other languages, but if you have friends in exotic places or you're trying to learn Mandarin and you need some help translating emails, Gmail has just added a Message Translation lab to their ever growing Gmail labs list.

I can't say I get a ton of email in other languages, but if you have friends in exotic places or you're trying to learn Mandarin and you need some help translating emails, Gmail has just added a Message Translation lab to their ever growing Gmail labs list.

Once the lab is enabled under settings, whenever you receive an email in another language than your own, Gmail will help to translate it. A header will show up at the top of the email that will say "Translate message to: ______" and you can pick whichever language you want.

New Gmail Lab Lets You Search Google Right in Gmail

I have a ton of great efficient Googling tips, but my best one thus far had been Googling from your browser.

I have a ton of great efficient Googling tips, but my best one thus far had been Googling from your browser. No longer — the new Gmail Lab that lets you do Google searches directly from Gmail is my new favorite fast Googling tip.

That's right, just enable this Lab in Gmail's settings, and you'll be able to do your Google searches without opening up a new tab or window.

You also won't have to copy paste the search results either, when you find what you're looking for — search results open in a chat-like window in Gmail and then ask you if you want to email or chat the search result. Brilliant.
