This Facebook Marketplace Regifting Suggestion Is Probably a Bad Idea

Subject of a Facebook Marketplace email that found its way to my inbox this morning: "Need to regift?

Subject of a Facebook Marketplace email that found its way to my inbox this morning: "Need to regift? Find your friends by posting on Facebook Marketplace."

Sure, posting in an online forum is a quick way to find a home for unwanted gifts (or even pick up some extra cash), but posting in an online forum that alerts your friends after you've posted an item could spell disaster if you try and regift an item that was given to you by someone in your online social circle. Could you imagine logging onto Facebook (or, worse, receiving an email that your friends have posted using the Marketplace app) only to find that they're trying to regift or sell an item you gifted them?

The lesson here: if you're going to regift, stay off of Facebook Marketplace. In fact, stay off of Facebook all together. Even in an age of digital listings, try to follow the golden rule of regifting: Don't give something to someone if you know they'll hate it. Chances are, they'll have to regift it, too.
