iPad Review From ElleSB

This post comes to us from community member ElleSB in our Geek Gear Reviews group:

I have a deep love for my iPhone, and I use it to do things I would never have thought a phone was intended for (reading books, writing lengthy memos for work, sending PDF's). So obviously, when the iPad was announced, I knew I needed one. I initially planned to hold out for a 3G, but AT&T dropped my 3G connection one time too many in the month gap between the release of the WiFi iPad and the release of the 3G version. I decided to get the WiFi 32GB and run it off of Verizon MiFi. So far, this has been a dream — lightning fast connections everywhere, and the MiFi is minuscule.

As for the iPad itself, all I can say is "wow." It is amazing. For the first time since I got it, my iPhone is not running out of power halfway through the day because almost everything the iPhone does the iPad does bigger. Internet browsing is spectacular — it is a full browser, as on an iMac or iBook, so web pages are large and fully functional. Email is fabulous, too, I can connect to my employer's exchange email server as if on a mobile device, but the interface is full featured like on a laptop. I have not yet downloaded iWork suite but it looks promising for word processing. Instead, I have been using Word and the Microsoft Office line through my employer's Citrix connection (there is a great Citrix app that allows this).

Read the rest of ElleSB's review of the iPad after the break.

Kitkatherine Reviews the Lenovo y550p IdeaPad

This post comes from community member kitkatherine in our Geek Gear Reviews group: In January, I ordered a new computer!

This post comes from community member kitkatherine in our Geek Gear Reviews group:

In January, I ordered a new computer! After a lot of research on computers (I looked at Dells, HPs, Toshibas, Asus, and more), there were only a few that fit my needs. I needed a fairly inexpensive computer to replace my Sony, but I needed a good computer as well. Around $1,000 (which I realize isn't inexpensive for a laptop, but for what I needed . . .) I wanted a nice processor at 2.4 GHz or above, at the least a 512 MB graphics card, at the least a 320 GB HD, and I didn't want it to look really ugly.

At first, Lenovo wasn't even in the picture. Then I found this computer . . .

While my exact model isn't available there, what I got was from Buy.com and it's cheaper than Lenovo's site! I love this computer - it is really nice looking, light, portable, and fun.

To see the details about what kitkatherine loves about the Lenovo y550p, just read on.

Geek Gear Review: CaseCrown Polycarbonate Glider Case

Reader dyskrasia posted a review of her iPhone case in the brand-new Geek Gear Reviews group: This case's color is beautiful and the texture feels pleasant in my hands.

Reader dyskrasia posted a review of her iPhone case in the brand-new Geek Gear Reviews group:

This case's color is beautiful and the texture feels pleasant in my hands. It's got a matte feel and is kind of a fingerprint magnet, but you can easily rub the prints away with your hand. So far it has survived a fall off my kitchen counter without damaging the phone or the case itself. It didn't even split the two pieces apart after the fall. Minus the Apple logo cut-out on the back, this case is a little thicker than the Seidio Innocase II Surface case (which my husband chose).

The problem with this thicker material is that his earbuds' jack plug fit inside the audio jack with no problem, while mine won't stay put because my earbuds have the fatter L-shape end (and not the skinnier jack plugs like the ones that comes with Apple's standard earbuds). The jack will pop up and out of the input if I just try turning the cord while it's plugged in, which is a little annoying. (Maybe I'll take a Dremel to the cut-out, but in the meantime I'll stick to listening to music on my iPod Classic.)
