Insta-snap-book: Which Photo-Sharing Network Will Rule Them All?

Photo-sharing networks are on the rise — and while that fact alone may not surprise you, the rate at which these networks are growing will.

Photo-sharing networks are on the rise — and while that fact alone may not surprise you, the rate at which these networks are growing will. At the D11 conference in California on Wednesday, legendary Internet analyst Mary Meeker delivered her highly anticipated annual report on where the web is and where it's going. The biggest takeaway? Brace yourselves for a Snapchat takeover.

The Southern California-based start-up has had a meteoric growth, doubling its usership in just the last two months and besting both Instagram and Flickr in terms of number of photos shared per day (over 150 million).

Facebook is still the leading platform, with over 350 million images shared per day on the network. Snapchat comes in second with 150 million, Instagram comes in third, and Flickr trails behind in fourth place.

According to Mary, photo-sharing volume is expected to double in 2013, so we want to know: where are you sharing your snaps? Which is the platform of your choice, and why? Is it social networking behemoth Facebook? Is it the filtered, square-shaped world of Instagram? The self-destructing, short-lived Snapchat? Or is it the newly redesigned Flickr?

Take our poll and tell us what your picture-sharing poison is, then divulge why in the comments! Find out what other Internet trends are expected to take off this year in Mary's full Internet Trends presentation (see the graph showing photo-sharing growth in slide 14).

Meet the "Heart-Stoppingly Beautiful" New Flickr: 1TB Free For All!

At a press event today in New York City, Yahoo!

At a press event today in New York City, Yahoo! made a big announcement for Flickr. And we mean big: the photo sharing site is getting a full makeover and offering one terabyte of storage to every user (that's well over 500,000 photos) — completely free.

Flickr isn't only making space for more photos, it's putting them front and center, too. The new activity feed, which Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer called "heart-stoppingly beautiful," fills your screen with recent uploads from your friends, yourself, and popular communities. The photostream was designed in a similar vein with large, high-res photos stacked on top of each other and a sweeping customizable cover photo.

Mobile is also getting some love. The new user interface is coming to the Flickr Android app, which features full-screen browsing and the same large thumbnail photostream as the website.

Yahoo! is really working its exclamation point as of late — in addition to the Flickr news, the company officially announced it was acquiring Tumblr for a cool $1.1 billion and moving its headquarters to Times Square in New York City.

Website of the Day: Snapjoy, a Dropbox For Photos

Photos have all sorts of homes on the web: Instagram, Flickr, and Picasa, not to mention the images still on your camera or tucked away in your computer.

Photos have all sorts of homes on the web: Instagram, Flickr, and Picasa, not to mention the images still on your camera or tucked away in your computer. Snapjoy (free) is a new web service that puts those pictures in one place. Import photos straight from Instagram, online albums, or your hard drive, and Snapjoy automatically rearranges them into a Timeline.

Share those images privately with close friends using a secure link, or publicly post them to social networks. Friends can save photos from your album to their own with a feature called Copy, which simply copies the photo to their collection without having to download or import the image all over again — Snapjoy only hosts the one photo, not multiple copies.

Snapjoy reminds us of Dropbox in a lot of ways. It's efficient and elegant cloud storage that's free and free of advertisements. And like Dropbox, users start with five gigabytes of space, and earn more free storage by connecting various social media accounts or referring a friend. If more room is needed, extra storage can be purchased for $4 (50 GB), $8 (100 GB), and $16 (200 GB) per month.

Tell us what you think of Snapjoy and any other web services you use to organize photos in the comments.

Flickr users come from all mobile walks of life, so what a relief to find that the company is finally releasing a Flickr app for Android users. The app is free in the Android Market, and provides a sleek and simple way to take mobile pics, enhance them with city-themed filters (Paris, Tokyo, NYC, Berlin, etc.), tags, and descriptions, then upload right to your Flickr account along with Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

You can also easily share images with Flickr groups, and mark photos as private right inside the app.

5 Reasons Why the iPhone 4 Is the Second Most Popular Camera on Flickr

Flickr is one of the most widely known photo-sharing sites for professional shutterbugs.

Flickr is one of the most widely known photo-sharing sites for professional shutterbugs. But according to a new graph released by the Yahoo-owned site, recreational iPhone 4-toting photographers are gaining ground.

The graph shows the most popular cameras used on the site: Nikon D90, Apple iPhone 4, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, and Canon EOS Rebel T1i are the most popular. Another interesting graph details the most popular camera phones used for uploads with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, HTC EVO 4G, and iPod Touch rounding out the top five. Why is the iPhone so widely used among photographers? I've got five reasons for you. Check them out below.

  • Portability — The iPhone 4 is tiny, and can slide right into your bag, pocket, or clutch with minimal bulk, which is quite the contrast to bigger, more professional-grade cameras.
  • Camera apps — Photoshop, Camera+, and Hipstamatic make it easy to turn regular images into something extraordinary.
  • Social features — Instagram and its offspring, like Postagram, let users share their images with various groups of friends instantly rather than hooking up to a computer, downloading images, then uploading them to their social networks.
