One of the chief complaints floating around about Facebook's new Places functionality is that it allows too many people to learn where you are. Luckily, with a few changed options within Facebook's Privacy Settings, it's easy to take advantage of the new feature without broadcasting your location to hundreds of Facebook users. I touched on this tip briefly in a larger post about Facebook Places privacy settings, but here's a helpful reminder: there's an easy way to use Facebook Places but restrict the information to only a select group of friends with whom you feel comfortable sharing your whereabouts.

Will You Use Facebook Places?

I don't think Facebook Places was a big surprise when the company announced its launch earlier this week. What did surprise me were all the partners that will be working with Facebook and their new location API — Gowalla, Foursquare, Yelp, and Booyah to start with.

Although there are plenty of other location apps to choose from (some of which give you rewards for using), it seems that Facebook is the Goliath to contend with now — it has 500 million users built-in, while other, newer location-based companies are competing to get a smaller piece of the pie. I'm curious to know — will you use Facebook Places, or are you uninterested in using the new feature?

At Wednesday's Facebook Places launch at Facebook HQ, there were a few questions about how exactly this new feature effects privacy. Some of those issues were addressed by Mark Zuckerberg and the Places team, but here, we'll dive in a little deeper and tell you how to change your privacy settings for maximum control over your Places check ins. I'm live at Facebook HQ, and this evening, Mark Zuckerberg and team (finally) announced Places, their new geo-location feature. Places will be available on mobile browsers, and a brand new Facebook app which will be made available tomorrow. Places is like a news feed for your locations, also letting you comment and like each place you visit. With Places, you can see your friend's activities and recommendations. Mark Zuckerberg was on hand for the presentation, and described three main reasons to use Facebook Places, which included:

  • See where your friends are
  • Discover new places to visit
  • Share experiences and places with your friends
