May the Force Be With You: Verizon Drops Price of Droid R2-D2 Edition

If you've been holding off on buying your own limited-edition Droid R2-D2 phone (why?), here's a good reason to head for your credit card now: Verizon has dropped the price on the Star Wars-themed device to $100.

If you've been holding off on buying your own limited-edition Droid R2-D2 phone (why?), here's a good reason to head for your credit card now: Verizon has dropped the price on the Star Wars-themed device to $100.

But that's not all: Verizon is also discounting the price on several other Android devices, like the Samsung Fascinate and the now-infamous Droid Incredible. While this could be a strategic move to get more Androids out the door before the Verizon iPhone 4 drops next week, I like to think that it's a sweet gift from Verizon to all of us during the short month of love.

Droid R2-D2 Edition Will Cost $249 After Rebate

In the words of C-3PO, "that R2-D2 is in prime condition, a real bargain!"

In the words of C-3PO, "that R2-D2 is in prime condition, a real bargain!" Or is it? Verizon Wireless has announced the price of the Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 edition at $249 after a $100 mail-in rebate, which is $50 more than the Droid 2.

The Star Wars-themed smartphone will be released Sept. 30. It will be preloaded with R2-D2 notification sounds and ringtones, live wallpapers (one is Luke balancing Yoda, which honestly sounds hilarious), an R2-D2 clock widget, "The Best of R2-D2" video with the original Cantina music, and an exclusive Binoculars App. If you're not ready to throw down for the new, novelty hardware but own an Android device running Android 2.1 or higher, you can download the Empire Strikes Back app from Android Market for $2.99.
