iPads Hit the Delta Terminal at JFK Airport

Holiday travelers aren't the only things we'll see more of in airports this season; iPads for travelers' use have just hit the Delta terminal at New York's JFK airport.

Holiday travelers aren't the only things we'll see more of in airports this season; iPads for travelers' use have just hit the Delta terminal at New York's JFK airport. Two-hundred iPads are being used, mostly in eateries, to help streamline travelers' experiences, adding a nice touch of technology to an often stressful experience.

Travelers can order food from one of these stationary iPads and have it brought to them, not unlike the similar, but iPad-less, service in the same airport's recently renovated JetBlue terminal. You can also use the iPads to access the Internet and check email, though I'd recommend triple-checking that you've cleared any personal information for fear of sharing your private details with the flying masses.

So far, there's no plan to impose a time limit, but that could change if Apple Store-like lines start queuing up around the devices.

Google Chrome Offers Free In-Flight WiFi This Holiday

Last year, Google stepped up to offer some sweet holiday travel perks by sponsoring free WiFi in airports across the country, and this year, Google Chrome is taking its holiday cheer to the clouds by offering free Gogo in-flight WiFi for Virgin America, Delta, and AirTrans passengers.

Starting on Nov. 20, travelers can log in during flights on all Virgin America and AirTrans aircrafts, and over 540 planes in Delta's fleet, to check emails, browse their favorite websites, and of course, send the obligatory "wheels up" tweet from 30,000 feet. The promotion ends on Jan. 2, 2011, but thankfully you still have some on-the-ground web-browsing options to choose from all year-round.

Would You Book Your Airline Ticket Through Facebook?

In any customer service-heavy industry, social networks can be a useful tool.

In any customer service-heavy industry, social networks can be a useful tool. Which is why social networking has been such a natural fit for airlines — many have taken to Twitter and Facebook, offering special fares via Twitter, and talking to and connecting with patrons to create a more user-friendly and happy flying experience. Now, Delta is taking social media to the next level, opening a social media ticket window on Facebook.

Find out more details about the service after the break.

Mommy Alert! Delta Recalls 1.6 Million Cribs

One of the few things that most parents are willing to put some good money into is a safe and sturdy crib for their newborn.

One of the few things that most parents are willing to put some good money into is a safe and sturdy crib for their newborn. Couples spend hours fretting over which crib seems safest causing some to spend thousands of dollars while others find bargain deals at less than $100. Unfortunately, those who suspected they got a good deal on a Delta crib may have to check their model and year. Delta Enterprise Corp, one of the world's largest crib manufacturers, recalled nearly 1.6 million cribs yesterday.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission:

The CPSC staff is aware of a death of an eight-month-old child who became entrapped and suffocated when the drop side of the crib detached in a reassembled crib where the safety pegs were not installed. CPSC is also aware of two entrapments and nine disengagement incidents in cribs where the safety pegs were missing.

Front Page: Plane Crash, Bombings, Berlusconi, Airline Merger

Plane Crash: Moments ago a DC-9 plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in the eastern Congo town of Goma.
  • Plane Crash: Moments ago a DC-9 plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in the eastern Congo town of Goma. CNN is reporting at this moment, 78 have died in the crash.
  • Bombings: More than 50 people have been killed in car bomb explosions in two Iraqi cities. At least 40 people were left dead and another 70 were injured in a blast outside a restaurant in Baquba, north of Baghdad. Baquba is the capital of the Diyala province. It has been an insurgent stronghold, where militants linked to al-Qaeda are said to have regrouped after being driven away from Baghdad. Shortly after the bombing in Baquba, police said a bomb in the city of Ramadi had killed an additional 13 people.
  • Berlusconi: As we reported yesterday, Silvio Berlusconi and his center-right alliance have returned to power after two years in opposition. For the first time since World War II, Italy’s parliament will not have any communist representatives in part because of the disappearing support for the communist-green Rainbow Left alliance. The failure of many small parties like this to win even a single seat leads to a sharp reduction in the number of parliamentary groups and a greater possibility of stable government.
  • Airline Merger: Rival airlines Delta and Northwest have agreed to a merger, creating the world's biggest air carrier. The $5 billion deal ends in a new airline to be called Delta, which will have annual revenue of more than $35 billion and employ about 75,000 people. The new CEO says, "merging Delta and Northwest is the most effective way to offset higher fuel prices and improve efficiencies, increase international presence and fund long-term investment in the business."

GenArt & Delta Team Up For Sundance Shorts

Think you'll never have a chance to get to Sundance?

Think you'll never have a chance to get to Sundance? Well, if you're into making shorts this is your lucky day. For the second year, GenArt and Delta airlines are teaming up for a short film competition, "Delta's Fly-In Movies." Filmmakers are invited to submit short films into the contest and five finalists' movies will be shown on Delta flights and flown out to the Sundance Film Festival where the winner will be announced and awarded $10,000 and a pair of round-trip plane tickets.

Viewers on both the selected transcontinental Delta flights as well as online (where the finalists' films will be available) will be able to vote for the winner. I'll probably end up catching the films online, but the inflight viewing idea is great. Considering the impulse to watch whatever an airline is showing, no matter how insipid, the thought of watching a few short films sounds like the perfect way to cut the boredom on a lengthy cross-country flight. Very cool. If you're interested in learning more, check out the full set of rules and regulations here. Thanks to Cinematical for the heads up on this competition!
