Do DVRs Make You Out of Touch?

I've been running an interesting experiment.

I've been running an interesting experiment. OK, it's not really an experiment, it's the way I've been forced to live for the past week while waiting for my new TiVo. Here it is: Suddenly, I know when TV shows are on, and my butt is on the couch at certain times. I know what the current "hot" commercials are (if there are such a thing).

How do I feel about it? Well, for one, I hate not having a TiVo right now. Aside from missing its lovable little UI, icon, and bloop bloops, I'm highly inconvenienced. I actually have to be home at the right time so that I don't miss Lost. I can only go to the bathroom and get snacks on commercial breaks. I am a slave to network programming.

Buzz In: What's the Oldest Thing on Your DVR?

I still remember the day I got my first DVR.

I still remember the day I got my first DVR. I plopped down on the couch, happily scrolling through all the options, hitting record on anything that looked remotely interesting, just because I could.

And then I never watched half of it.

I've finally deleted most of those original recordings, but there are a few things that still sit there because I'm convinced I'll want them someday. So for this Buzz In, I'm asking you to think way back through your TiVo or DVR directory and tell me what's the oldest thing you've kept around.

I'll start: In 2006, I recorded Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit — which I'd already seen in theaters and on DVD — because I was convinced I'd watch it on some sad, rainy day. Two and a half years later, that day still hasn't come!

What about you? What's your oldest recording?

iPhone App You Need: DVR Shows

TiVo addict in the house here — and there is finally an app for the iPhone for my TiVo.

TiVo addict in the house here — and there is finally an app for the iPhone for my TiVo.

DVR Shows is a 99-cent app, and while you can't control your DVR with it, you can see what shows are recorded and currently on your TiVo (as well as what's about to delete) when you're on your home WiFi network.

I'm still holding out for the app that lets me add and delete shows from my iPhone wherever I am, but baby steps don't bother me one bit.
