Chromebooks are known for their bargain-basement prices, but Google's cloud-based computers are taking a turn for the premium with its latest offering, the Chromebook Pixel.

Google's new computer is taking the Windows Surface Pro (hello, touch-enabled display) and the MacBook Air (oh hi, super-thin casing) head on in terms of hardware, but on the software side, the Chromebook Pixel still runs on the "almost zero setup" Chrome OS.

The high-resolution, Retina-grade laptop is the most advanced hardware we've seen in a Chromebook — and cheap it is not. Two versions of Chromebook Pixel are available online and in select Best Buy stores: a 32GB, WiFi edition for $1,299 (ships next week) and a 64GB, WiFi + LTE Data for $1,449 (ships in six to seven weeks).

Those are big numbers on the Pixel's price tag, but the hardware specs do not disappoint. The latest laptop boasts the highest pixel density of any laptop available today, with over four million pixels on a 12.85-inch screen. Welcome back, laptop! Despite reports that people use tablets more than laptops for everyday needs, this week, Samsung announced a new line of Chromebook computers that use Google's Chrome operating system and start at the bargain-basement price of $249.

Pushing users toward the cloud, Chromebooks are light on hardware. Similar in size (11-inch HD display, under three pounds, and ultra thin) and appearance (silver exterior, black chiclet keyboard, and touchpad mouse) to the MacBook Air, the Chromebook, however, relies on Google cloud products like Gmail, Drive, Google+ Hangouts, etc., rather than the desktop-based storage and software of typical laptops.

But if you opt for the $329 Samsung Chromebook 3G and download these five key Chrome apps (remember, your Google account is already linked to Drive's word processing and spreadsheets), Chromebook will have you working like a pro and finding your pricier software-based laptop a distant memory.

If you're heading into the friendly skies this Summer, there's another reason besides awesome mood lighting to fly with Virgin America — you could get the extra added bonus of surfing the web at 35,000 feet with a new Chromebook. Starting today, and running through Sept. 30, Virgin America and Google are loaning free Chromebooks to passengers for use on select flights out of San Francisco, Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, and Chicago. To get one, all you have to do is find the ChromeZone kiosk nearest your departure gate for check out, enjoy during your flight, and then return it to your arrival crew before you leave the airport.
