Does His Car Affect How You Feel About Him?

Who doesn't love a nice car?

Who doesn't love a nice car? I'll be the first one to admit that I do, but did you know that your car actually says a lot about you? Wesley Brown, partner in Iceology, was quoted saying "This new generation of consumers looks at a vehicle as a piece of clothing" and in today's society where there's so much emphasis on appearance, his statement makes perfect sense.

Since there's no denying that looks matter when it comes to dating, let me take it to another level and ask you if the car he drives plays a part, too. I mean, would Jake Ryan have been as hot if he was driving a mini van instead of a red Porsche? Ladies, putting all modesty aside, tell me, does a guy with a nice car affect the way you feel about him?

Pampered Pals: Doggies Stylin' Car Seat

North spent all of his early life in New York City, accompanying me legally (and quasi-legally) on many adventures in one of his seven dog bags.

North in Car Seat North spent all of his early life in New York City, accompanying me legally (and quasi-legally) on many adventures in one of his seven dog bags. We traveled on buses, subways, ferries, and airplanes but, for nearly four years, his only car experience involved taxicabs. When we moved to California last August and got a car, I invested in a monogrammed car pet seat from Brookstone (from $89.95). Not only is he secure and able to see out the window, I feel better knowing that he can’t get his claws into my leather interior. Secured with a seatbelt behind the passenger seat keeps him safe from front seat airbags, and makes mischief checks easy. The seat comes with a pull-out drawer perfect to stash adventure essentials (like his leash, dog waste bags, antibacterial hand gel, emergency food/treat supply, portable bowls, and a bottle of water). Car seats come in two sizes for dogs up to 30 pounds; if your dog is larger consider a harness and car seat cover instead. Now that we have this seat, North can safely come along on all my adventures and peek-and-greet at new friends from afar!

DearSugar Needs Your Help: My Friend Invited Herself on Our Road Trip!

Dear Sugar and Wants to Be Alone Allison need your help!

Dear Sugar and Wants to Be Alone Allison need your help! She's going away for Labor Day weekend with her boyfriend and they have been really looking forward to spending the 6 hour car ride alone but her friend found out where they're going and wants to tag along. How can she politely let her friend know that she's not invited without hurting her feelings?

Dear Sugar--

My boyfriend and I are planning on going away for Labor Day weekend. We have been really looking forward to spending the 6 hours together in the car on the way to our destination. One major problem - a friend of mine found out about our trip and asked if she could tag along because she has friends and family at the place we are going to. She is too cheap to purchase a plane ticket and figured this would be a good opportunity to catch a free ride so she can see her relatives.

She wouldn't hang out with us once we got there but we still don't necessarily want company on the ride. I told her we are still toying with the idea of flying even though that's a bold face lie. I don't want to come off as selfish but my boyfriend and I really want to take this as an opportunity to have fun alone. Is it completely bad of me to lie and say we went ahead and booked our flight so that she doesn't tag along as a third wheel? What if she finds out? I would tell her the truth but I'm worried that she'll take it personally and get really offended if I tell her we just want alone time but I also don't want to just suck it up and let her come. What should I do?

Give Your Car a Health Makeover

Nothing is worse than being stuck in your car after work during rush hour.

Nothing is worse than being stuck in your car after work during rush hour. This is precious time that can really end up being a buzz kill to any after work health endeavors. So in an effort to health proof your car, here are some "dos and don'ts" when giving your car a healthy makeover:

  • DO: Have a new container of water with you -- I have my Sigg with me everywhere I go.
DON'T: Keep an open bottle of water in the car -- This can be a breeding ground for all sorts of germs and not to mention the fact that bottled water is bad for the environment.
  • DO: Keep a bag or container of nuts (or even an energy bar if it's not too hot) in the glove compartment.
DON'T: Keep candy bars, or any other kind of junk food you'll be tempted to splurge on while sitting in traffic.
  • DO: Keep your gym clothes in the trunk, ready to go so you can head straight to the gym.
DON'T: Plan on going home first to get your gear -- Think about it: An hour in traffic, then home, then back out to the gym... I don't think so.
  • DO: Keep some music in you car that is a sure way to pump you up.
DON'T: Sit there in silence (or listen to slow music) -- You'd be amazed how easy you can talk yourself out of going to the gym while sitting in an hour of traffic.
  • (*For those trying to quit smoking)
DO: Keep a pack of sugar free gum or hard candy in the car.
DON'T: Keep any cigarettes in your car, ever!

TGIF!

Now if this isn't a great way to kick off the weekend, then I don't know what is.

Now if this isn't a great way to kick off the weekend, then I don't know what is. Most people would start by first kicking off their shoes, but this lady shows us a different way of cutting loose. Lucky for us, the security camera caught it all on tape!

How to Deal With Road Rage

I'm sure you've all been one of those pissed off people, angrily clenching the steering wheel, cursing at the traffic that's making you late for work.

I'm sure you've all been one of those pissed off people, angrily clenching the steering wheel, cursing at the traffic that's making you late for work. Stress from driving can cause your blood pressure to rise and your emotions to get the best of you behind the wheel. People with such road rage honk their horn incessantly, yell at other drivers, tailgate cars in front of them, and weave in and out of different lanes, which can cause accidents.

If any of this rings true for you, here are some ways to prevent road rage:

  • Carpool. Take a bus. Hop on the subway. You can get to work anyway you want, but who said you have to be the one behind the wheel? Now instead of getting annoyed during your commute, you can read a book, catch up on the news, write a letter, talk to other people, do a little work, or even snooze. Doesn't that sound relaxing? Plus, it's better for the environment!
  • If you have to drive, try to avoid certain times of day or places that get congested. I used to leave for work a little earlier, which almost cut my commute in half.
  • Make yourself a mix of calming songs to listen to in the car. You'd be surprised what relaxing music can do for your mood. Or listen to a book on tape. Getting lost in a good story can distract you from getting bothered by what's happening outside the car.
  • Be the bigger person. If someone cuts you off, doesn't use their turn signal, runs a red light, or rides up your behind, just let it go. You can't change what they did (even if you give them "the finger" with both hands), so just forget about it. Be proud that you are being a good and safe driver.
  • If you come across an aggressive driver, keep your distance, don't make eye contact, don't honk, and don't do anything to instigate them.

Most importantly, buckle up!

New Commercial is Full of Lovely Stuff

Before you ask why there's a picture of a car on YumSugar, you better take a closer look.

Before you ask why there's a picture of a car on YumSugar, you better take a closer look.

For a new 60-second commercial spot, car company Skoda hired a team of bakers, model makers and home economists to create a cake version of their new Fabia. The commercial, which reportedly cost around a million dollars to make, features the team baking the car cake from scratch. They used 180 eggs, 100kg of flour, 100kg of caster sugar, 30kg of almonds, 65kg of dried fruit, 180kg of orange sugar paste, 12.5kg of jam, a huge vat of chocolate and a whole lot of other delicious fixings. The car took 4 days to complete, and is incredibly detailed, down to the golden syrup "motor oil" and giant gelatin lights.

50% Car, 100% WTF?!

Despite losing the junk in its trunk, this low-rider can still bust a move.

Despite losing the junk in its trunk, this low-rider can still bust a move. I'm sure these dudes are wondering what woman could possibly resist a "sporty" two-seater with a mean (spray) paint job like this, but boys, we can. Less is not always more.
