Download of the Day: Newly Updated Bing iPhone App

I was an early fan of the Bing iPhone app after its initial launch, and now the app is even more useful!

I was an early fan of the Bing iPhone app after its initial launch, and now the app is even more useful! Microsoft released an update to the Bing app adding two important features: travel and maps.

I use Bing's travel search almost exclusively to find plane tickets, so I'm especially excited about this update, which adds a "Travel" tab to the app's home screen and allows you to search for the best plane fares — complete with Bing's Price Predictor, telling you when the best time to buy your tickets will be. Plus, there's a calendar for highlighting special deals and other offers.

Additionally, Bing has incorporated its updated Maps function and optimized it for mobile, including larger font sizes for larger roads, easy switching between Map and List views, and an enhanced "what's nearby" function allowing you to quickly navigate different neighborhoods.

The Bing app is free from the iTunes Store.

Don't Know Who to Follow on Twitter? Ask Bing!

Twitter has a pretty well-rounded follower recommendation tool, but if you want to look elsewhere, you can now check out Bing Social, that not only gives you recommendations on influential Twitter users to follow, but you can also get the latest trending topics on the left hand nav bar, and public updates on Twitter and Facebook about any search topic you choose.

Bing Maps isn't quite a year old, but it's taking fast steps to catch up with industry-leading Google Maps. Today, Microsoft announced the addition of transit directions to 11 US cities including New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco, with plans to rapidly expand coverage. In addition to providing several different transit options for a trip (when applicable), Bing also adds details like scheduled stop and travel times. Find out what else is coming in Bing Maps after the break.

Which Search Engine Do You Use Most?

Unsurprisingly, Google takes top honors when it comes to search popularity, capturing 65 percent of the US search market. But now, Microsoft's Bing has moved into the number two spot, passing Yahoo as the second most popular search engine with a 14 percent share in the market, according to recent Nielsen figures.

While Google is generally the default search engine in many browsers and mobile phones, Bing is quickly gaining ground; recently, the Samsung Fascinate shipped with Bing as its default browser, and rumors were flying that all Verizon phones would be coming with Bing as the default engine (the rumor has since been dispelled). I much prefer using Bing for travel-related searches and also for image searches but tend to use Google for everything else. What about you — which search engine do you use most?

Picture This: Google vs. Bing Image Search

Yesterday's Google Image Search announcement gave searching for photos and other images a whole new face.

Yesterday's Google Image Search announcement gave searching for photos and other images a whole new face. The service (which was just rolled out to me) shows bigger photos with more detail, easier navigation, and better search options. I was totally enamored until I remembered Microsoft Bing's image search, which thrives on images — starting with the large, stunning image on the home screen. If you're searching for images, what's the best to use? After the break, a breakdown of each program's top features and strengths . . . search on!

Check out each search engine's top features, and what I like about both of them when you read more.

Bing Adds Updates to Its Web Search and iPhone App

I live in constant jealousy of my friends with Android phones over my favorite Android app — Google Goggles.

I live in constant jealousy of my friends with Android phones over my favorite Android app — Google Goggles. In particular, the ability to scan barcodes and images for visual recognition is pretty impressive! Now, one of my favorite iPhone apps — Bing — has gotten a big update, and now features my most-lusted-after Google Goggles feature: barcode and image recognition of products. Also in the latest version are improved search functions including search results from your Twitter and Facebook networks, and business list and map view integration with search results.

And that's not all the Bing news for today — the web search at Bing.com just got new entertainment features, including the ability to search for Zune songs, artists, or lyrics, and listen to full song tracks for free. If you'd like to purchase a song, Bing offers one-click access to purchase from Zune.net, even if you aren't a Zune Pass subscriber.
