Learn the Klingon Language, One Star Trek-ism at a Time

Very few are fluent in the the guttural language of the Klingon warrior race — but now Trekkies around the World Wide Web can try their hand at the ancient alien dialect with the new Klingon Translator by Bing for web and Windows Phone.

Very few are fluent in the the guttural language of the Klingon warrior race — but now Trekkies around the World Wide Web can try their hand at the ancient alien dialect with the new Klingon Translator by Bing for web and Windows Phone.

Head over to bing.com/translator to see what your favorite Star Trek-isms look like in Latin-based Klingon or the traditional piqaD Klingon script. In the words of Captain Picard, "make it so," and master the old alien tongue one word at a time!

The Klingon Language Institute, along with professor Marc Orkrand, who is credited with inventing the language, built the Star Trek-approved translation algorithms from the ground up. This, of course, means that there is still a lot of work to do on the translator, and master Klingon speakers can contribute to its progress by emailing translator@microsoft.org.

Before you hit the theater on May 17 to see Star Trek Into Darkness (which stars the one, the only Benedict Cumberbatch), learn the language of Worf to impress all your Trekkie friends.

Pinning Feature Now in Bing Image Search

Because taking the time to move your cursor up to the "Pin It" browser plug-in button gets in the way of a rapid-fire pinning session, a Pin to Pinterest function is now available on Bing image search.

Because taking the time to move your cursor up to the "Pin It" browser plug-in button gets in the way of a rapid-fire pinning session, a Pin to Pinterest function is now available on Bing image search. It's as basic as searching for a photo, whether it's of a new laptop bag, Spring vegetable recipes, or vacation inspiration.

Once the images populate, click on the desired photo, where it'll appear as a pop-up with a Pin It button in the lower right-hand corner of the page. When adding to a Pinterest board, Bing fills in the name of the item with the original online source noted. Expect your pin count to go way up.

Bing For iPhone: An Alternative to iOS 6 Maps

Since the Google Maps app for iPhone is a far off dream and Apple Maps might not be able to catch up for another 400 years, iOS 6 users are on the hunt for alternatives — and Bing believes their iPhone app is a contender.

Since the Google Maps app for iPhone is a far off dream and Apple Maps might not be able to catch up for another 400 years, iOS 6 users are on the hunt for alternatives — and Bing believes their iPhone app is a contender. The team at Microsoft's "decision engine" put up a rather sneaky blog post yesterday, aimed at new smartphone users looking for an app with the "mapping functionality you need" and chose, of all things, an aerial view of Apple's Cupertino campus as an example screenshot.

Bing may seem like a small fish in a big pond dominated by Google (which leads with a commanding 66.8 percent share of the US search engine market), but don't discount the second-most popular search engine just yet. We took Bing's app for a spin, and found a surprisingly functional and practical maps application — that wasn't without its quirks. Read on for the six features that make Bing standout in the maps race.

Kim Kardashian Most Searched Celebrity on Bing

Celebrity searches may bring up dangerous results, but that won't stop curious fans from hunting down stories and pics of their favorites online.

Celebrity searches may bring up dangerous results, but that won't stop curious fans from hunting down stories and pics of their favorites online. Bing recently released its list of the top search trends of 2010, and taking the crown for most searches is one hot cell phone hacker: Kim Kardashian.

Although there were some major searchable milestones this year, like Antennagate, the World Cup, and the release of Sex and the City 2, just to name a few, it seems that a bikini-clad Kardashian can take them all down with just a few Twitpics. Jay-Z

Bing's Newest Friend: Jay-Z

I'd argue that Google knocked it out of the park with its Arcade Fire Chrome Experiment, but now Bing is hoping to use a big-time musician for a successful marketing push.

I'd argue that Google knocked it out of the park with its Arcade Fire Chrome Experiment, but now Bing is hoping to use a big-time musician for a successful marketing push. Jay-Z is releasing his 300-page autobiography a page at a time in cities across the country, and fans can locate the pages by logging onto bing.com/Jay-Z, which uses Bing Maps to guide players to the pages.

The project also takes advantage of the new Bing-Facebook partnership as Facebook is used to authenticate users who sign up, and clues to the pages' locations will be posted on Bing's Facebook page. According to Bing, the campaign is aimed at growing the Bing audience, and apparently Jay-Z fans (not just his 4 million social networking connections) have "heavy search tendencies." Who knew?

The promotion (scavenger hunt?) lasts until Nov. 20; 200 registered winners will receive prizes for finding pages.
