How Many NookColors Have Been Sold?

In December, it was revealed that 18,000 NookColors were produced every day. Powered by Android, the $249 tablets function sort of similarly to many of the other, more expensive tablets without the huge price tag. And while they'll never have the full functionality of, say, the Xoom, as ereaders go, it's powerful and worthwhile.

New estimates are predicting exactly how many have been sold since the device's November debut . . . can you guess how many have been sold?

Jessica Alba may be getting glammed up to walk the Golden Globes red carpet today, but she spent her Thursday morning running errands, and brought her new Nookcolor along for the ride. The new Nookcolor isn't just for reading books — the Android operating system makes it more like a tablet, and it comes with tons of cool kid-friendly features, which her daughter, Honor, should adore.

If you're a Nookcolor owner, you could emulate Jessica and rock the Montgomery Cover ($35), or choose from one of the many other stylish cases B&N has to offer. What about you — are you a Nook or Kindle kind of gal?

Barnes & Noble unveiled its new Nookcolor in October, and the device seems to be taking off. Despite the fact that Amazon's Kindle continues to set sales records, Barnes & Noble is proceeding full speed ahead with Nookcolor production. Perhaps in anticipation of the popularity of Google's eBookstore?

The devices are manufactured in China and then flown to the US for distribution. Can you guess how many Nookcolors are produced in just one day?

Barnes & Noble Unveils New Nookcolor

Barnes & Noble took a big step sideways with the launch of its new Nookcolor yesterday — instead of the usual eink screen and bottom touchscreen you're used to, the Nookcolor now sports a full 7-inch color touchscreen! The Android-running ereader is slightly larger than the previous Nook and brings you books, newspapers, and magazines as usual, plus allows you to surf the Internet, listen to music, and play games. Can we even call it an ereader anymore?

The Nookcolor comes stocked with 8GB of memory space (expandable up to 32GB with a MicroSD card) which holds 3,000 books. It is WiFi-enabled, allows you to borrow books from your friends with the LendMe app, and you can customize your home screen, listen to Pandora, and get free books and deals with the Barnes & Noble "More in Store" program. All of these features makes me wonder if it's not a bare-bones tablet that hopes to steal some thunder from the new best-selling Kindle.

Where Do You Get Your Books?

Barnes and Noble announced big losses today suggesting the company's chapter of book-market domination is coming to an end.

Barnes and Noble announced big losses today suggesting the company's chapter of book-market domination is coming to an end. The country's top bookstore has seen a significant drop in store sales, but it's not all bad news: its digital book sales have risen.

Back in the day, I used to crave an afternoon of wandering through the oversized shelves at a mega bookstore, but now I can't remember the last time I entered one, let alone bought a book there. Instead, I've taken to downloading books instantly to my Kindle. And when I'm in the mood for browsing — or need to save — I'll break out my library card. What about you?

Barnes & Noble Creates In-Store Nook Boutiques

As interest in ereaders continues to heat up, Barnes & Noble has dedicated even more in-store real estate to its Nook.

As interest in ereaders continues to heat up, Barnes & Noble has dedicated even more in-store real estate to its Nook. The company just announced it will be expanding in-store Nook displays into "full-service ereading Nook Boutiques." These boutiques will take up 1,000 square feet of floor space and feature demonstration tables, multiple Nook devices for customers to try, and tons of accessories.

Additionally, the boutique will be a perfect place for Nook users to test out the Nook's new Read In Store feature, which allows customers to browse ebooks for free. Look for Barnes & Noble Nook Boutiques to begin rolling out late Summer to early Fall. Sounds like a great way to introduce people to the ereader concept — maybe even mom will choose to join the ereader party.

Amazon's Dual-Screen Patent Could Spell Trouble For Nook

Although there has been a raging price war on ereaders recently, Amazon may have a leg up on the competition with a new patent it was awarded yesterday.

Although there has been a raging price war on ereaders recently, Amazon may have a leg up on the competition with a new patent it was awarded yesterday. Filed back in 2006, this patent describes a dual-screened ereader, coming with one larger area to read from, while supporting a smaller LCD display. Obviously, this was the original Kindle design.

Since the Barnes & Noble Nook comes with just that — a large e-ink screen and a smaller LCD display — the company could be sued for patent infringement. You may be wondering why no one knew of this patent until now. Seems that since Amazon didn't file any foreign patents on the product during the approval process, they didn't have to publish the application. Will Amazon sue for infringement? Only time will tell.

Barnes & Noble Brings Its Books to the iPad

The heat is on!

The heat is on! Not only can you get the Kindle on your Mac, but Barnes & Noble announced their new ereader app for the iPad last night, which brings all the benefits of owning B&N's native Nook ereader to Apple fans who couldn't pass up the chance to read books and browse the Internet on a (nearly) 10-inch tablet. The App lets you choose from Barnes & Noble's free, paid, or sampled books, magazines, and even sharing them between friends with B&N's LendMe technology.

Plus, if you've purchased a book online or through a Nook, you can find it on your iPad app so you don't have to repurchase your favorite titles, and the interface is customizable to make it easier to read — adjust the font, color, and margin sizes, and add notes, highlights, or links to the text. Best part? The app is totally free.
