Video of the Day: Two Animated Sherlock Holmeses

Only two months to go until Sherlock season two comes to US shores, so what do we have to satisfy our need for the geekiest in crime solving?

Only two months to go until Sherlock season two comes to US shores, so what do we have to satisfy our need for the geekiest in crime solving? Hunting the Internet for fantastic fan creations! The Sherlock opening credits were remixed into a Japanese anime style reminiscent of Spike Spiegel and his crew from Cowboy Bebop.

The anime look at Sherlock may just be a concept, but Sherlock Holmes himself has seen the animated look before. The cartoon Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century hit the airwaves in 1999 featuring a defrosted-from-cryopreservation Sherlock and robot Watson working to outwit the regenerated Moriarty. If somehow you missed this animation classic, the entire series is available for purchase. Or, take a look back at the futuristic storyline in the video after the break.

Studio Ghibli Bumps Beyoncé From Twitter Throne

It was the baby bump heard 'round the world last August when Beyoncé unveiled her pregnant belly at the MTV VMAs to the tune of 8,800 tweets per second — more than the East Coast earthquake, the women's World Cup soccer final, and even the death of Osama bin Laden.

It was the baby bump heard 'round the world last August when Beyoncé unveiled her pregnant belly at the MTV VMAs to the tune of 8,800 tweets per second — more than the East Coast earthquake, the women's World Cup soccer final, and even the death of Osama bin Laden. It was a record. Well, until recently that is. According to Twitter, a new record was set on Dec. 9 during a TV screening of Hayao Miyazaki's Laupita: Castle in the Sky, which garnered a whopping 25,088 tweets per second in Japan.

The 1986 film is the first to be created and released by Studio Ghibli, which has amassed a cult following thanks to its library of films that also includes Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, and My Neighbor Totoro, among others.

If you're ever been to Japan, be sure to check out the Studio Ghibli Museum in person — the Disneyland for Anime fans!

This week, acclaimed Japanese director Satoshi Kon passed away. In his honor, I decided to watch one of my favorite Kon movies of all time, Paprika ($10), while commuting to and from work on my iPhone. It's pretty common that Japanese films get revamped with English voices when they hit the States, but I prefer watching foreign movies in their native languages and switching on any available subtitles. If you feel the same, there's an easy way to turn the subtitles on during your next foreign iPhone film fest.

First and foremost, launch your movie from your iPhone's iPod app. Get the rest of the steps after the break.

Gundam Statue Comes Down as I Hit Japan Running

My cousin used to be completely obsessed with everything anime, but Gundam was one of his favorite shows.

My cousin used to be completely obsessed with everything anime, but Gundam was one of his favorite shows. So I thought it totally appropriate to share these images of the 60-foot Gundam statue with you now since I'm heading to Japan this week! I'm crossing the Pacific to check out the Tokyo Game Show, as well as take in all the sights, sounds, and gadgets there are to be seen in the country that brought us ramen and Godzilla.

The Gundam statue was erected to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the famous anime in the man-made island of Odaiba, just outside of Tokyo. Although I won't be able to see the statue (its deconstruction should already be underway — or is it?), but stay tuned, because I'll be bringing you images from the massive Tokyo Game Show and all the tech goodies I can find!
