Lady in Red: Michelle Is Barack's Belle of the Inaugural Balls

"She inspires me every day.

"She inspires me every day. She makes me a better man and a better president. . . . I'm just lucky to have her. My better half and my dance partner," is how President Barack Obama introduced his wife, Michelle Obama, at the Commander in Chief's Ball on Jan. 21. The first lady wore a red Jason Wu gown and sweetly sang to the president while Jennifer Hudson performed her rendition of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together."

Editor Annie Scudder, who was reporting from the second Washington DC fete, The Inaugural Ball, said it was a packed house waiting for the first couple to arrive. "It's like a sea of people, many of them in long sequined dresses," she said. "You could see the first couple's big smiles from afar. They looked at ease and in appreciation of Jennifer's performance."

This year there were only two inaugural balls being thrown in Washington DC, down from 10 in 2009, with the Commander in Chief's Ball honoring the troops and military families. The Inaugural Ball was expected to host an estimated 35,000 people. Performers at the events include Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, John Legend, Usher, Marc Anthony, and the cast of Glee. Then and Now: Michelle Obama's Inaugural Ball Hairstyles

President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and her brand-new bangs danced the night away at the 2013 Inaugural Ball.

President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and her brand-new bangs danced the night away at the 2013 Inaugural Ball. Fast-forward four years, and two things remain the same: the couple's obvious affection for one another and Michelle clad in Jason Wu. The FLOTUS's hair, however, has a new twist. Instead of swooping fringe styled against the perfect blowout, as she wore it in 2009, Michelle's now-blunt bangs were paired with a shoulder-grazing flip. Both chic coiffures are as stylish as the first lady herself, but if you had to pick your favorite, which one would you say has you fist-bumping?

Case Closed: Sasha Obama's Turtle iPhone Cover Found

As the Inaugural Parade made its way through the nation's capital, all eyes were on the first family, but it wasn't the president or his fabulous first lady who caught our eye — it was young Sasha Obama, snapping pics from the sidelines with an adorable bright green turtle-clad iPhone.

As the Inaugural Parade made its way through the nation's capital, all eyes were on the first family, but it wasn't the president or his fabulous first lady who caught our eye — it was young Sasha Obama, snapping pics from the sidelines with an adorable bright green turtle-clad iPhone.

What is the case in question, you ask? Griffin's KaZoo Turtle Case ($24), which leaves all ports accessible and is made of thick, durable silicone — and is actually for a 4th Gen iPod touch and iPhone 4/4S. The soft rubbery case wraps all around the front of a smartphone, covering the side edges and the home button.

The turtle-dino case is an interesting choice, and we're hoping that POTUS' youngest has a thing for paleontology (yay, science!). Fingers crossed.

NASA Gets in on the Inauguration Magic

While Washington DC is filled with musicians and celebrities this week to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, there's a group on the ground that holds a special place in the geek heart — NASA.

While Washington DC is filled with musicians and celebrities this week to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, there's a group on the ground that holds a special place in the geek heart — NASA. The space agency used inauguration weekend as an opportunity to let the public check out the NASA headquarters, mingle with astronauts and the team responsible for the Mars Curiosity rover, and get children excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education.

NASA was also at the Inaugural Parade, with full-size models of two spacecraft, the Curiosity rover and the Orion capsule. Walking with the floats were astronauts Alvin Drew, Serena Aunon, Kate Rubins, Mike Massimino, Lee Morin and Kjell Lindgren, Leland Melvin, and John Grunsfeld, along with the Curiosity team from California including Mohawk Guy Bobak Ferdowsi. Hip hip hooray for science's big day at the festivities!

After his swearing-in ceremony, President Barack Obama continued his inaugural festivities today first with the signing of a proclamation to commemorate the inauguration, then with an inaugural luncheon, and finally with a parade that he kicked off by walking with Michelle Obama along the parade route to the sounds of screaming fans. Barack also honored his wife, Michelle, at the luncheon, finishing his speech with "To my extraordinary wife, Michelle: there is controversy about the quality of our president; there is no controversy about the quality of our current first lady."

The parade paid homage to the hometowns and schools of the first family with floats like the Hawaii State float — featuring a large volcano — to honor Barack's birthplace and an Illinois State float for Michelle's home state. Barack, Michelle, Sasha, and Malia appeared to be enjoying themselves, even getting up and dancing at times. There was an especially cute moment during the parade when the girls snapped pictures with their iPhones of their parents kissing. See the Obamas continue with the day's inaugural events before tonight's two inaugural balls now!

Happy Inauguration Day! Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Obama supporters — including celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyoncé Knowles, who sang the national anthem — crammed into the National Mall to celebrate Barack Obama's swearing-in for a second term as president of the United States.

We're on the ground at the event, and editor Annie Scudder reported that there were big cheers for Hillary and Bill Clinton when they arrived. She added, "The crowd is friendly and on their toes to see. The people around me were fans of Michelle and her new hairstyle, of course. Her bangs are the talk of the town!" Obama delivered a hopeful speech, saying, "America's possibilities are limitless," and that our strengths include "youth and drive, diversity and openness." Obama's message about investing in our future got big cheers from the crowd, said Annie. Equal pay for women and gay equality also fired people up, as did his comments about reforming voting restrictions and immigration.

President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were actually sworn in yesterday during a private ceremony, while the official public event took place in Washington DC today. The Jan. 21 festivities include the swearing-in ceremony, a luncheon, a parade, and two inaugural balls. See all the photos from the star-studded inauguration ceremony now!
