Gigapixel Photography: From Mars to the Presidential Inauguration

Picture-perfect moments abounded during Monday's presidential inauguration celebrations, but it's a certain type of photo that still has us geeking out days later: the gigapixel panorama.

Picture-perfect moments abounded during Monday's presidential inauguration celebrations, but it's a certain type of photo that still has us geeking out days later: the gigapixel panorama. Below is a screen capture from just one part of Washington Post photographer Toni Sandys's GigaPan image of President Obama's inaugural address, which is comprised of 305 hi-res photos taken over a 13-minute period and packed with billions of pixels.

Not only is the image an HD panorama of the event, but it's also interactive. As you pan and zoom in on parts of the photo, those little specks of people come into focus and can be tagged with Facebook handles. The yellow markers are what readers have marked, while the blue are VIPs verified by the newspaper.

The GigaPan photo is nothing new — it was also seen at the president's 2009 inauguration. What is new, though, is the amount of gigapixel photos that have been produced in the last four years; there are currently over 95,000 GigaPans that have been uploaded to the company's online community.

So how is a GigaPan image made? The company started in 2008 as the commercial offshoot of a research team made up of scientists from Carnegie Mellon and NASA. Based on technology used on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers — you know, for imaging the surface of Mars — GigaPan has since become available to everyday consumers as an add-on for most DSLR cameras.

Keep reading to find out where to buy a GigaPan device.

All the Festive Highlights From the Inauguration Weekend

The nation came together this weekend to witness President Obama's second inauguration, and we were on the ground in DC covering all the festive fun.

The nation came together this weekend to witness President Obama's second inauguration, and we were on the ground in DC covering all the festive fun. We kicked things off on Saturday, attending a National Day of Service event at the National Mall. All across the country, Americans were encouraged to chip in some time for community service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and at my event, celebrity volunteers like Eva Longoria, Ben Folds, and Miss America donated their time alongside hundreds of other everyday citizens who wrote letters to sick kids or military service members overseas. There was also a service fair that provided an opportunity to learn about future opportunities to get involved.

Later Saturday night, we headed to the Kids' Inaugural Concert, an event put on by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to honor military families. Seasoned pop star Usher kicked off the show, and he didn't hold back his enthusiasm for Obama, changing the words to "OMG" to "O-ba-ma." Jill took the stage to share her experience as a military mom, since her son serves in Delaware's National Guard, and to introduce Michelle, who said giving back to military families was her favorite part of the inauguration. Katy Perry closed the show singing "Fireworks" and dressed like a patriotic firecracker!

On Sunday night, Michelle and Barack Obama spoke at the inaugural reception, and we were there on Monday when President Obama was sworn in publicly for his second term. But he and Joe Biden got a jump start on things. The Constitution dictates that the swearing-in happens on Jan. 20, so the two had private swearing-in ceremonies on Sunday. The official event was moved to Jan. 21, however, in observance of Sunday's religious significance.

Monday's inaugural celebrations began with the swearing-in ceremony, which included performances by Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncé. Then the president and first lady attended a luncheon, where Barack honored Michelle by saying, "There is controversy about the quality of our president; there is no controversy about the quality of our current first lady." Then the Obama family let loose while watching the inaugural parade ahead of the night's two inaugural balls, where Michelle stunned in a red Jason Wu gown. And finally, the first couple attended a prayer service Tuesday morning, an inaugural tradition that dates back to George Washington. See all the inauguration highlights now!

Re-Create Beyoncé's Inauguration Day Makeup in a Flash

Everyone is talking about Beyoncé Knowles's neon orange nails from yesterday's inauguration ceremony, but her makeup was also flawless (as usual).

Everyone is talking about Beyoncé Knowles's neon orange nails from yesterday's inauguration ceremony, but her makeup was also flawless (as usual). Makeup artist Mally Roncal worked to prepare the star for her epic performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

After prepping skin with primer, concealer, foundation, and powder, Roncal recommends using a combination of highlighter and blush on cheeks for a flush that is natural yet radiant. Then, to mimic Beyoncé's eye makeup, apply Mally Shadow Stick in Saddle Shimmer ($25) on the lid and underneath the eye. You can lighten up the look by placing highlighter to the inner corners of the eye, as well. And to get Beyoncé's cat-eye eyeliner look, layer two products: a pencil topped with a liquid, for long-lasting wear. Finally, swipe on High Shine Liquid Lipstick in Mally's Baby ($20) for a similar glossy pink lip. And don't forget to apply a translucent powder before you hit the road, so makeup will last from morning to night.

Michelle Wears White, Barack Tears Up at National Prayer Service

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama — his "better half," as he called her last night at the inaugural balls — took part in a more somber time of reflection after all the weekend's inauguration festivities during the national prayer service at Washington National Cathedral.

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama — his "better half," as he called her last night at the inaugural balls — took part in a more somber time of reflection after all the weekend's inauguration festivities during the national prayer service at Washington National Cathedral. Michelle wore Naeem Khan as she sat beside Barack, Vice President Joe Biden, and Dr. Jill Biden at this final inauguration event. The tradition of a national prayer service occurring the day after the inauguration dates all the way back to George Washington. This morning's service included a message from the Rev. Adam Hamilton from the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS. While we saw the president let loose yesterday during the parade and inaugural ball, today we saw his emotional side as he teared up while listening to the Children of the Gospel Choir perform. See the sweet moment now.
