Hands-On the New 17-Inch MacBook Pro

Yesterday, the world's thinnest 17-inch notebook was unveiled by Apple at Macworld, and she is a beauty.

Yesterday, the world's thinnest 17-inch notebook was unveiled by Apple at Macworld, and she is a beauty. With a unibody enclosure, glass trackpad, and a high-res LED backlit widescreen display, the 17-inch Pro looks and feels like a million bucks — sleek yet robust. The best part? The included longest-lasting battery that is said to last up to eight hours on a single charge and can be recharged up to 1000 times.

Apple did build the battery right into the encasing to save on space and weight, but what that means for you and I is that you're stuck with the battery and you won't be able to easily change things like your Ram. Aside from this minor flaw, I'm all about this new $2,799 notebook.

Macworld 2009: The 17-Inch MacBook Pro Is Unveiled

They always manage to save the best for last — don't they?

They always manage to save the best for last — don't they? Phil Schiller just announced the new MacBook Pro, which is the world's thinnest 17-inch notebook, measuring in at .98-inches thick, and weighing only 6.6 pounds. On the side of the laptop, you'll find a Mini Display port, a Firewire 800, digital audio in/out ports, three USB ports, Expresscard, and the standard Ethernet and Magsafe. An optional add-on? You can pay an extra $50 for an antiglare screen if you really want to pimp it out.

Other great features include the glass trackpad, which includes four-finger gestures functionality and multibutton support. It even comes with the longest-lasting battery ever, which is said to last up to eight hours on a single charge. The sad part? It's built-in, so you're stuck with it. And for eco-chic peeps, it's EPEAT Gold, and arsenic, BFR, mercury, PVC free, and comes with 34 percent less packaging that's highly recyclable. The new MacBook Pro's will start shipping late January and will cost $2,799.

Live From Macworld: The New iLife and iWork

Apple's Macworld announcements keep rollin' in!

Apple's Macworld announcements keep rollin' in! Continuing with my earlier coverage, I'm picking up with Phil Schiller's keynote, centering around iLife; so far he's mentioned that new features of iPhoto and iMovie, and now he's moving on to Garageband.

Garageband can now teach you to play an instrument! With the "Learn to play" feature, you can get lessons from artists like Sting and Fall Out Boy on the piano or guitar.

The new iLife is supposed to be available later this month, and ships free on all Macs, but for upgrades will be $79, or $99 for a family pack that can be used on five computers.

Macworld Mania!

Macworld 2009 is finally here and what better way to kick things off than with the Apple keynote — bittersweet indeed. So we may not have front row seats at the keynote, but Gizmodo does, so we're recapping the goods from them. Although, we will be heading over to the Moscone Center very shortly, so stay tuned for all of the updates. In the meantime, here's some new iPhoto, and iMovie, and more Apple awesomeness to get you started. Sadly, there wasn't any Mac Mini or iPhone Nano announcements.

What Will Apple Unveil at Macworld Today?

In just an hour and a half, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will be delivering Apple's opening keynote at MacWorld here in San Francisco.

In just an hour and a half, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will be delivering Apple's opening keynote at MacWorld here in San Francisco.

Despite Apple announcing that this will be its last year participating at MacWorld and then Steve Jobs admitting his health problems, the show must go on, and it certainly will.

Wired has already made their predictions about what we can expect Apple to announce today, and I must say, I won't be shocked if the rumored new desktop — dubbed the Mac Mini — is unveiled, or the miniaturized iPhone — the iPhone Nano makes an appearance as well. I guess time will tell. Be sure to catch all of the MacWorld action here on the site!

Do You Think Apple Will Be the Same Without Steve Jobs?

As MacWorld inches closer and closer, I can't help but have a little fear of what will become of the Apple I know and love once Steve Jobs retires.

As MacWorld inches closer and closer, I can't help but have a little fear of what will become of the Apple I know and love once Steve Jobs retires. Although Apple insists that he is ready to hand over the torch to a new set of leaders, the rumor remains that his health is the reason for the changeover and subsequent disappearing act from MacWorld.

What do you think — Will Apple be the same without Steve Jobs as the leader and face of the company, or is the fear just all in our heads?

Apple Pulls Out of Macworld: Do You Care?

Yesterday some shocking Apple news was announced that had the entire geek-filled blogosphere up in arms; Macworld 2009 would be Apple's very last Macworld.

Yesterday some shocking Apple news was announced that had the entire geek-filled blogosphere up in arms; Macworld 2009 would be Apple's very last Macworld. I was seriously stunned when I heard the news, but another Sugar peep summed it up best by saying, "That's like Santa announcing it's his last Christmas." Steve Jobs won't even be delivering the opening keynote this year, it'll be Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, which is going to be very strange, especially if he wears a black mock turtleneck and jeans.

Since Steve Jobs, Apple announcements, and big unveilings have played a huge part in my-past-two Macworld experiences, I can't imagine what Macworld will be like without any shiny and new Apple gadgets and Steve Jobs kicking off the week with a big bang. What are your thoughts? How do you feel about the announcement?
