Last week, one of my geeky dreams came true — I went to the Google headquarters! Not only did I get to take part in the Doodle 4 Google awards day and see sixth-grader Grace Moon take home the grand prize, but I also witnessed some of the very things that make Google so good. Click start to see what they are!
With season seven of American Idol wrapping up last week (congrats David Cook!), I was completely shocked that a whopping 97 million votes were cast last Tuesday night. From that 97 million, a record-breaking 78 million were generated from text messages through votes, trivia contests, and other SMS content.
When AT&T polled 416 users about their texting and Idol habits, 51 percent said they text more frequently during the Idol season than other times, while 22 percent said they first learned how to text by voting for singers. Although I was totally obsessed with Idol this season, I have to admit that I . . . didn't vote! I know, I know, such an Idol hypocrite. Next season, I promise. What about you? Were you one of the 78 million who sent a vote via text?
If you were inspired by my Steampunk post the other day or are regularly intrigued by Vintage Geek posts like I am, then I think you'll be into this old-fashioned looking webcam, the Retrocam!
You won't have to slave over a new webcam and steampunk it into fanciness, nor will you have to suffer through the shattering old bulbs or put your head underneath a black cloth like in the olden days. Even though that sounds awesome.
Only $35, but here's a nonsensical drawback — it's not Mac-compatible, and yet Urban Outfitters is displaying it with a Mac. D'oh!
Can you guess who is playing photographer with her Lumix digital camera by Panasonic? A bit more skillfully testing than geek's usual Match the Celeb With the Cell Phone — since celebs don't show off their cams as much as their cells — but still a fun guessing game nonetheless! Scroll down to leave your answer!
They don't call it a laptop for no reason! If you manage to constantly use your laptop, on your lap, you probably find that your legs get unbearably hot. Intelligent Forms Design realized that this is a common problem and decided to whip up a creative solution, which totally caught my eye on Luxist.
They designed three totally distinct pillows, which are not only adorable and ingenious, but they help to keep your laptop cool as well! Choose from log, button or terrapin pillows that are made from natural fiber fabrics and provide extra support and increased air ventilation. Now for the catch, the price, which is $160 each for all designs. . . Ouch! That's OK, I don't plan on trading in my amazing Ikea laptop stand anytime soon anyways!
Lisa Loeb is not only a talented singer, songwriter and actress (she has a new album coming out on Tuesday), but she's much more tech savvy then I would have ever imagined — BlackBerrys and MacBooks and iPods, oh my! AOL's Switched recently chatted with her about all her tech habits — including her favorite websites (Facebook made the list), her love for her MacBook Pro and BlackBerry Curve, and how she is a big fan of puzzles like the Rubik's cube! Here are some of the highlights from the interview:
On what cell she is using now and why she loves it or hates it: "I use the BlackBerry Curve. I love that I can e-mail, take photos, send and receive e-mail, type on real buttons, not a virtual keypad. I love that it's sleek. I especially love taking photos with it, but I hate that it's difficult to get the photos onto my MacBook Pro."
Discussing whether or not she'll get an iPhone: "Not yet. I'm waiting on a flash, on a keypad that I can turn sideways, and to come to terms with the virtual keyboard."
And finally, if she is a Mac or PC kinda gal: "I use a Mac mainly because it's really user-friendly. Also, ever since I was a kid I've used an Apple. Ross Perot provided our school with Apple II computers when they came out. We used to program them and play Lemonade."
As I was tidying my DVD and video game library in my bookcase at home the other day, I kept seeing game titles I haven't played in forever. "Ohhh, let's play Jeopardy! Tetris! DDR!" I squealed. My renewed interest is totally due to the fact that I burned out on all these games approximately two weeks or so after buying them — which makes me fearful for my upcoming personal Wii Fitness challenge, a little.
Wii games usually stay perennially fun because even if you're bored of them, guests will come over and get you back into it. But even with my favorite games, I eventually tire of them, especially hot ones that I get and play the hell out of at the beginning. I liken it to watching the same movie over and over again. Burn out is only natural, right? What about you? Is this your occasional affliction too? Source
