The New York Times reports that ABC and its writers have had disputes over whether employees checking their company-issued BlackBerrys after work hours is considered overtime.
Although I'd laugh off checking one or two emails and simply reading them as obviously not being overtime, it's clear that we have a modern-technology-induced gray area here. Reading a couple of emails while outside work (and occasionally replying) is a way to check in, and as long as that's optional on the employee's part, then I don't consider that working (and hence, not overtime).
But, some people will get caught up or will be expected to answer the emails and work as a result of that and that's when you get into the aforementioned gray area.
Ah, finally the freedom to switch your SIM card from phone to phone has arrived with the white "unlocked" Palm Centro smartphone. This tiny and extremely light cell also includes Google Maps for mobile with the fabulous My Location feature. With My Location you can easily get directions to various locations in proximity to your current location on the map. . . Trust me, I use it on my Curve and it's a total lifesaver! Just visit Google Maps Mobile on your Palm Centro for the free My Location download.
The unlocked GSM version Centro is available for US customers and costs $299 from Palm.
The Connect-a-desk is not the first time I've seen a desk-free laptop desk — remember the Lindo wrap-around hip desk? That was voted "freakish" by a landslide, and ThinkGeek's version hasn't really made the concept any more palatable.
For 40 bucks, you get the ability to walk around while using your laptop, but for $40, you may suddenly not know yourself anymore.
It's not that it can't be useful — the question is really — is usefulness worth the price of your dignity? But am I being too harsh? What do you think?
On July 1, California's new state law that requires drivers to use hands-free technology like headsets and bluetooth-enabled devices will take full effect. The Policy Institute of California is predicting that this new law will save around 300 lives a year (a 7 percent decline in fatal car accidents), considering the drop other states have noticed since enforcing the law.
The penalty if you get caught talking with your phone to your ear? It's only $20 for first-time offenders and you won't lose points against your driving record. Regardless, the cops issuing tickets are going to be swamped for the first six months till people finally realize they're going to need a hands-free device. I suggest going geek chic with the Jawbone Headset. Hey, at least Seal is playing it safe while maintaining his techno-chic flair with his shiny Bentley, shiny shades, and shiny Bluetooth earpiece!
There's no denying that I'm down with the old school. I love taking a look back and seeing just how far we've come over the last few decades — from big and bulky gadgets to sleek and stylish pocket-sized ones. But there's just something about the trailblazers that will always stick with me. Maybe it's the fond memories of booting up my very first Apple computer, or being able to call someone outside without wires totally blew my mind. Whatever it is, take a walk down memory lane as I round up my favorite vintage geek gadgets! Oh, and don't forget to post your faves to the Vintage Geek Group!

Midday Muse: Robot Love
I'm loving how the display of these toy robots under bell jars takes them from geek to chic! This is a great idea for bachelors who want to give their homes a more mature look, but aren't ready to part with their toys.
