Last week I had one of those freak out moments when my laptop started acting like it had been possessed, as I had zero control over it. When it booted in safe mode, I knew it was time to get some backup assistance, and let's be honest, an involuntary safe boot on a Mac is almost like the blue screen of death on a PC.
Thankfully another resident geek guru came to my rescue and we both agreed that the 100-degree weather could be impairing my MacBook. And without further ado, he quickly installed one of his "fan favorites" (hee hee), smcFanControl. This free download allows you to control the built-in fan on every Intel Mac to make it run cooler. Macs are already insanely hot, so being able to rev up your fan from the default setting in hot weather definitely helps your Mac cool down. I've had it on full for the past week and it seems to be helping. Oh, and it also indicates the temperature of your laptop, so you can monitor whether you need the fan turned up.

It's summertime folks, and even though you should be outside enjoying the weather, it's okay if you hide away every once in awhile to play a game or two. Last year at this time I was stoked for the release of a few awesome games (like Odin Sphere), but this year I'm not really jumping up and down with excitement. But that's not to say there aren't some playable titles coming, so check out these games that I think are worthy of a spot on your Gamefly rental queue, a drive to the video game store, or maybe even a purchase in this slideshow!
With Apple's iPhone 3G set to make its entrance into this world next Friday, financial experts are already making predictions about companies that will be the biggest movers and shakers in the smartphone market over the next few months.
According to Electronista, a study conducted by RBC Capital Markets indicates that consumers looking to purchase a new phone are seriously eyeing up the iPhone 3G. Of the 3,600 participants in the study, only 35 percent said they would purchase a new iPhone back in March, unlike the 56 percent now.
Reasons why they changed their minds? The drop in price of the iPhone, the built-in GPS mapping, enterprise email and third party applications. Yes, yes, yes and yes, I know exactly what you mean! What about you guys? If you don't have an iPhone, are you now thinking about getting one?
OK, no, you can't buy this Google Sari from ThinkGeek (but I guess you can make it, so Etsy sellers, start your engines), but this takes geekwear into a whole new level.
Spotted at a mall in India by a Boing Boing reader, there's no word on whether this was simply a display or if these were on sale inside. Sheer glee has me hoping for the latter.
What do you think of this intersection of Delhi and Mountain View?
An energy meter sounds responsible but not sexy — and one other thing would keep me from buying it, normally — that fact that I don't think I'd be patient enough to read it to figure out how much electricity I was actually using and whether my household was going over its limit. But I won't worry about that with the Wattson Home Energy Meter because it measures and presents your energy uses in dollars, which is what your bill will cost!
You don't have to waste time converting anything or remembering how many units you consumed last month, which meant you had $50 bill, carry the one, etc. Just how much energy you're using in cold, hard cash (and depending on where you are, you can set it to read in dollars, euros, yen, and pounds stirling). You can also store and download your energy history to keep track of it — and the Wattson is both PC and Mac compatible!
Not only can specialized websites help you get your drink on, but they can help you get your cook on, too! Foodpairing takes the guesswork out of pairing your side dishes and ingredients to your main course so you can serve a well-rounded and oh-so-refined meal. Just select one of the many dishes or ingredients you want to use, (for me it's all about the artichokes) and Foodpairing will spit out a chart for you to sink your teeth into. My mouth is watering already!
Not only am I a techie fiend, but I'm a crafty gal to boot! That means that I love making things with my hands, not just filling them with shiny gadgets. Gimmie some credit here; I've shown you lots of ways that you can be crafty, too, from repurposing old favorites to making new cases for your tiny new iPods. Check out my slideshow of my favorite ways to get crafty — so easy anyone can do it!
