A recent study reports that Facebook users who upload flattering photos of themselves and have a ton of "friends" are really just narcissistic. Well, it's a little more complicated; the researchers can suggest that the social-networking website can be used as a tool to detect narcissism in the people who use it.
As for the signs that you're a little too into yourself: Posting flattering photos as your profile pic — who doesn't?!; and maintaining a large stable of Facebook friends — I'm over it, since I used to add anyone and everyone in my MySpace days.
Also interesting is that social networks are more popular among narcissists, even though I surmise that many people of a certain age are on Facebook because their friends are on it. Another thing that got me thinking was the importance the researchers put on how people express themselves online; my opinions have certainly changed because of someone's MySpace or Facebook page. What do you think?
In need of something extraordinary to spice up your favorite gadgets? You know that I'm otherwise an el cheapo when it comes to anything with a hefty price tag, but I couldn't resist these accessories and just had to share! The Leather Computer Portfolio Case offers a sleek, protective tote for your laptop, and can also hold papers, a notepad and pens. You can pick one up in light brown for $475. Next up is the leather iPhone Case that zips up your iPhone in style for $165. And last but definitely not least, the iPod Case that may look like it's plastic at first glance, but it actually boasts an aluminum frame and has a leather exterior. This case can fit 30GB, 80GB and 160GB iPod models and costs $125.
Since the Google/T-Mobile presentation yesterday of the hotly-anticipated Android-running G1 smartphone, the G1 has been playing with my emotions with reports that it looks great, works great, but has some big flaws. The again, up and down reviews are no huge surprise, especially if you weathered the storm that was the iPhone 3G launch.
So here's the new commercial for the G1. The concept is apparently based around the fact that if you make words grammatically incorrect, young people will respond (since that's how they talk?). Maybe I'm guilty of using the non-word "funner," but "funnerer?" Never.
That said it's a nice-looking commercial that doesn't cop anyone else's advertising style (ahem). What do you think?
The action thriller movie Eagle Eye will be landing in theaters this Friday and E! Online had the chance to sit down with the leading stars from the movie, including Michelle Monaghan, Billy Bob Thornton and Rosario Dawson, to talk about the technology from the movie and the role it plays in our everyday lives. It sounds like it has a riveting plotline — I can't wait to go see it!
Go Google! I've already confessed how much I love Google Maps, and that was even before the latest news — Google Maps now offers transit info for the entire New York metro region! With the transit option you can check out transit stops in your area and view station information and schedules. Did you know that Google Maps offers transit info for other cities like Chicago and San Francisco? Be sure to see if your city is on the list. Oh, and if you need to find out what time your train is going to arrive while on the go, you can visit m.google.com/nyc for transit directions on your cell phone.
Crudites and dip on a ceramic vintage camera dish? Coming right up! I'm kind of entranced by this Camera Serving Dish ($72) by Cul-de-Sac; its photography print and the fact that you can serve food on it and put it in the dishwasher might put it on my home must haves list.
There's a few pretty colors to choose from, but I do wonder if this is taking my love of vintage photography a bit too far. I'm taking pictures of you at my party, and you're eating off this dish, so have I put too many cameras in your face? Discuss.
If you haven't registered to vote because of one lame excuse or another ("I don't know how," "I don't have time," or my fave "It's too complicated") then I have fabulous news for you — you can now take the simple route and register to vote using your Xbox! With all the time you spend playing games, the least you can do is make your voice heard in between Gears of War sessions and Mountain Dew runs.
Partnering up with Rock the Vote, Xbox Live's voter registration is free to access with a Xbox Live membership. And although you can't actually vote from Xbox Live, they make it pretty darn easy to take the first steps in doing your civic duty. Plus, if you've already decided on who you'll be casting your vote for come November, you can participate in online polls, and download gamerpics of your candidate to show your support. How patriotic of you!
