Everyone has been generating a giant ballyhoo about a 2005 law that decreed daylight-saving time would start three weeks earlier and end one week later, beginning this year. Congress passed the law after deciding that an early evening daylight would translate into energy savings, but geeks everywhere are worried that software created earlier is set to automatically advance its timekeeping by one hour on the first Sunday in April, not the second Sunday in March. Is this the new Y2K? Not likely. As we all know, nothing happened with the dreaded Y2K bug, but that doesn't mean nothing will happen this time either. It seems computer clocks set to change at the traditional daylight savings time will all be an hour off.

According to the AP, the problem won't show up only in computers, of course. It will affect plenty of non-networked devices that store the time and automatically adjust for daylight saving, like some digital watches and clocks. What can you do to prevent this? read more
These days portable music players are smaller than a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. But, back in 1984, they were roughly a bagillion times larger and of course accepted those cassette tapes you've been thinking of throwing out. The Toshiba 'Walky' Head Stereo, in other words Walkman, is one of my favorite retro chic players - in part because it's pink and because it reminds me of a time when I carried 5 or 6 mix tapes in my purse.

To quote a friend: "I remember a time when the three most important things in my life were my Walkman, New Kids on the Block tape and my acid-washed vest." Yep, sounds about right. For a comparison photo of the Toshiba Head Stereo and the pink shuffle as well as some fun vintage ads, just read more

I've been to two weddings for couples that met online and know a handful of people that got sick and tired of meeting dates at bars and work functions so they turned to online dating services in search of true love. Like it or not, the internet has profoundly changed the way we interact with one another, strangers and even potential love interests. The Podlove project explores how digital communications affect relationships between lovers, friends or strangers.

A series of five documentaries produced by Australian filmmakers, you can get downloadable Podlove documentaries as well as join forums to talk about the series and phenomenon on the website. I guess it's not weird for me to google my ex and every cute guy I meet - I mean everyone is doing it. For more about the unique, 21st century tales of love and friendship, read more
In Blood Diamond Academy Award-winner Jennifer Connelly plays Maddy Bowen, an American journalist who gets caught up in the story of two men, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou, in search of a rare pink diamond. The film is set in 1990's Sierra Leone and filled with civil war and conflict, which Connelly's character captures on a fancy Leica camera.

According to camera fans, Connelly's character uses an M6 Classic and a 35mm Summicron. However, the sound director dubbed an SLR sound whenever Connelly took a photo. For more Blood Diamond photos - Leo has an awesome watch!- and another filming goof, read more
"I can't believe you honestly think you have more money than me!"

Now this is what I call a rarity. Not only were Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates in the same room together, but they actually spent the evening wining and dining together! Maybe they weren't comparing annual incomes at the D: All Things Digital conference, but I guarantee you there was some iPhone shop-talk squeezed in at some point. Jobs is scheduled to discuss the latest Apple developments at the conference in May including the iPhone and Apple TV.

Nominated for achievement in makeup, Click was the one movie in 2006 with a plot revolving around a geeky gadget. While the idea of an all-powerful, time controlling universal remote is far-fetched; it did provide some lighthearted laughs and drama. Whether you call your remote by its real name, "clicker" or "twanger," remotes play a daily part in our tech lives and it's easy to wonder what you would have done were you in Adam Sandler's shoes in the movie.

For a brief history of the remote, just read more
