We already knew the "i" craze had passed the point of no return, but it looks like "pod" mania may be gaining speed in the race.
Yesterday I learned about the Apod, or Asthma Pod, which is a colorful plastic case that clips around your standard asthma inhaler. They cost about $20 (or £10 because it's a British company) and come in 7 colors. So why am I so bent out of shape? For the most part the devices are cute, brightly hued plastic that will hopefully make asthmatic children everywhere feel better about their illness, however, the name alone makes me worry and wonder about the day the "pod" epidemic will end.
From the Laserpod, "pod" Hotels to EnergyPods for midday napping, there really is no logic to the over usage of the word "pod," which sprang to popularity with the lionization of the iPod. Will three out of five plastic items that are shaped like a bean or iPod be labeled "i-something" or "pod" from here until eternity? Will we wake up one morning and find out "pods" are suddenly as uncool as Walkmans? Most importantly, when will it end?
If "can you hear me now?" is part of your everyday vocab, you might want to check out Signal Map, a user-generated cell phone signal map that notes the strength of major service providers on a map. You can use the free service to find a cell signal in your area, or add your signal to help others. As you can see from the image below, my search for AT&T service in the 90210 zip code showed there is a three to five-bar signal in Beverly Hills, while there's limited coverage in the West Hollywood area. So, if Brandon Walsh had an iPhone, he'd be all set...
Not every guy (or girl) is chic enough to pull off the geek tie, but for those who are, there seem to be endless fashion choices. From video game themes, Harry Potter prints, math symbols, retro computer graphics, url jokes, and pixelated images, there really is no end to the geekery.
It's a style that doesn't exactly jive with the J.Crew masses, but if you work in the tech industry, or want a funny novelty tie on deck for parties, you can always find an entertaining geek tie to top off your outfit online. My favorite by far is the Circuit Board tie, which looks exactly like a real circuit board. It costs $24.99 and is sure to entertain everyone who sees it.

All of a sudden, Space Invader items are popping up everywhere. Released in Japan in 1978, the game seems to be having a pop culture comeback, infiltrating street art, geek jewelry and now novelty purses. The Space Invaders Bag is being sold by DCX for about $50. What do you think, is this bag totally geeky, or geek chic? Source: Oh Gizmo
After a long-winded YouTube run, Jessica Lee Rose, who plays the main character Bree in the popular Lonelygirl15 videos, has decided to move on to bigger and better things. The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that after more than a year and 260 episodes, 16-year old Bree was killed off by the religious cult that had chased her for the life-giving qualities of her rare blood type. This video marked the end of season one which was played out in 12 videos posted over a 12-hour period exclusively on MySpaceTV and the LonelyGirl15 website. Although Bree will no longer be a part of the show, the next season will be starting next week with the same title and remaining characters. You can check out the new episodes by visiting her myspace channel. And as for the famous Ms. Rose? She is developing a new web comedy that should be out by the end of this year and is pursuing more Hollywood acting gigs with co-stars like Lindsay Lohan. When news of a new Joie de Vivre video game-themed hotel hit the internet this spring geeks everywhere freaked out. Everyone began to wonder: What will it look like? How much will it cost? What games will it feature? We have the honor of working blocks away from San Francisco's newly renovated Hotel Tomo so we headed over for an up-close look at their eccentric accommodations.
While the two gaming suites have just opened for business, the hotel has been redecorated in an eye-catching Japanese Pop theme and features beautiful murals, iPod docking stations, flat screen TVs, free wireless and comfy "fat boy" gamer chairs in every room. If you're not ready to spring for the more pricey gamer suites, which cost around $500 for a night and can be rented for shorter events, regular rooms start at $109 and feature "On Command" video games and a fun, geeky atmosphere just steps from one of the cities hippest Karaoke spots.
The hotel is well on its way to becoming a geek haven. See for yourself.
