eBay Cuts Listing Fees

Are You Now Going to Use eBay More?

SF Gate reported yesterday that eBay will reduce its listing fees for sellers in an effort to keep its current users from going to rival sites and be more appealing to new users. I've always viewed eBay's fees as a necessary evil to a great service, but I'll admit it has deterred me a little in the past, especially when I can use Craigslist to sell something local. But for collector's and in-demand items, nothing beats the reach of eBay. Of course, I wonder how you guys feel — were you already defecting to other sites with cheaper fees, and will eBay's reduced listing costs get you to use it more? Or, did the fees never discourage you?

anyone else with ebay alternatives? i haven't gone near the place since before they "changed" their fees.

A highly recommended site is elfingo.com for online auctions. They are the new ebay. Many smaller sites like this offer buyers far better deals than ebay ever could. Buyers also save a ton because this site charges little or nothing depending on the day. One more reason I like elfingo.com is because they don't take a part of the sale at all. No commissions or final value fees. A+++ http://www.elfingo.com

i am glad people mentioned the jacked up final value fees -- what sneaky jerks! my bf and i both sell on ebay all the time, and we were both horrified after reading ebay's fee-change announcement.

i don't really use it for selling stuff. maybe i'm a pack-rat?! :) i admit that the reason is in part to do with fees but also just all the hassle. i never remember my password and all that so keep setting up accounts.

Ebay is sensing its competition big time...so obviously they're now working really hard to begin reducing their fees...something they should have begun doing long ago.

I'm not happy with ebay right now but my other alternatives like ioffer.com don't get as many hits. Especially after this last transaction I don't think I'll be selling with them again.

reading the replies is pissing me off and making me hate ebay all the more. i'm not going to buy *or sell* from them again. i hate enough that they own paypal. bastards.

I agree brettn... Speaking for myself, I am not a big time seller so most of my items will be sold for $25 or less. So now I am a bigger victim then before! Sorry but I will hit the smaller auction sites, give new sites like - jooxter.com - a try, or even use the free swap sites to conduct my selling. E

Oops in my message about it should have been: OLD FEES: $0.20 (list) + $1.31 (final value) = $1.51 NEW FEES: $0.15 (list) + $2.19 (final value) = $2.34

This is such a scam on ebay's part. Yes, they reduced the insertion fee by a few cents, but then they raised the final value fee by an additional 3.5%!!! To make the math easier, say you listed an item for 1 cent and it sells for $25. OLD FEES: $0.20 (list) + $1.31 (final value) = $1.51 NEW FEES: $0.15 (list) + $1.31 (final value) = $2.19 So great, you saved 5 cents listing the item, but it actually cost you 68 cents more than before when the auction ended. All this is on top of the fees that ebay STILL charges you for accepting PayPal payments. Now that ebay owns PayPal, they should eliminate these additional fees if you are accepting payment for an ebay auction. The one good thing I see from the ebay changes is the reduction of only the last 12 months of ratings counting towards your feedback percentage. I had one non-paying bidder leave me my one and only negative feedback, and it'll be nice to finally get my 100% back.

ebay's fees are ridiculous. even a small reduction won't get me back--i found myself jacking up items just to cover fees. there's no room in ebay for casual sellers looking to get rid of stuff without having to give it away (which was kind of what was so great about the service way back). i'd rather use freecycle and give it away in some cases than use ebay.i'm with binkaycoy...plenty of other alternatives, so screw em.i still buy from them on occasion...but sell...not again.

The reason I didn't place my item for selling on Ebay is because of their exorbitant fees in every feature they offer. That's ridiculous. So I use Amazon , Craigslist and Yodle. Although Ebay is more popular but it you have more competition if you're using generic andnon-collectible items.
